I wish my department would allow us to carry the weapon of our choice. I'm stuck with a Glock 22 and they don't even want to entertain the idea of me carrying my XD, let alone a 1911 or any single action for that matter.

Kinda funny...How many cops shot themselves with their Glocks last year?

The G22 is a fine weapon after a few trigger enhancements, Polish contact points and replace the factory connector with a 3.5 lb one and you wont believe how well you will be able to shoot one. However I still dont believe it is a good duty weapon, There are too many variables on the street, and like a 1911 you have to train with it constantly to remain safe and proficient. We are limited to Beretta 92 D 9mm's and I dont have a problem with it.Would I carry my 1911's? you bet in a heartbeat, Am I comfortable carryiing the Beretta? Hell yes, its been completely reliable and I can get it into action quickly and safely and am confident in our choice of ammo, Rem 124 grain Golden Sabers.

I own two Glocks and think they're fine guns. You just have to train with them and obviously some don't do that enough. I find it ironic that some departments will show such disdain for an, "unsafe gun" when mechanically, the 1911 has more safeties. At the end of the day, training makes you safe.

who around here carries the 1911 for CCW?
For about 3 Years I carried a Springfield 1911 A-1 with an IWB Holster.
I've just switched to an X-D45, same type of carry. The reason I switched was
to gain more ammo and the Beavertial on the 1911 does jab you in the side
at times.

Talking

A casual monitoring of various 1911 boards, in particular, seems to leave the impression that these decisions ("Glock v.s. about anything else at an Law Enforcement agency) are made by chairborne rangers who haven't been on the street since Motorola started making radios....

(I knew a Deputy Chief who really wasn't sure that Patrol Units should have radios in them. This is the guy who took the house numbers off his mailbox, but liked to park his take-home car in the driveway. Wouldn't have mattered too much, except that what he was driving was a former marked unit that had been re-painted some ghastly yellow color, and the decals were quite happily visible under the paint....)

Glocks seem to be a safe "everybody's using them" bet (kinda like the old gag about buying IBM computers), and XD's or S&W's M&P (and a few others) are all similar enough that if you're into "no controls" guns, and don't mind the XD's grip safety (I consider it a slight advantage), you're not really going to have "public relations" issues with the choice. (I've met Officers who had no idea what a 1911 was, too!) "We" know the potential hazards, particularly for soft clothes work, but I'm not sure the Brass understand....

The Beretta 92 and most of S&W's semis are also fine guns, and if you don't mind the upside down safety (assuming you use the decocker/safety as a safety in the first place), will do you well. My only problem with any 9mm is that it's a 9mm....

What's interesting, and, I think, downright funny, is Para's "LDA". It's called "Double Action", and you don't have to deal with the little old ladies who can't handle Condition One, and you get all the nice levers and whatzises, but it's really just any other 1911 with a little quirk. But the Brass see "Double Action" and they're sold....

(The good news is that it is a 1911, unless somebody decides that the 9mm version is sufficient.... )

(I'm not going to get into the 9mm v.s. .4x argument. For a Uniformed Officer, unless you're like a buddy of mine who really likes having 91 rounds on his belt when he hits the street, the trade-offs in favor of the heavier round and fewer rounds on your belt, seem to me to be worth it. Plainclothes and Concealed Carry folks probably are better served by a small double-stacker of some 9mm persuasion, although a .40's on my list for that.)

Just ruminating.... My daily carry (I'm an old rent-a-cop, but primarily carry as Civilian) is one of two smallish 1911's - a 4" Kimber and a 3.5" Para LDA. (My agency doesn't care.) If I really want something smaller, there's an XD-9SC here and a couple of .380's.... We won't talk about the full sized M&P in .40 that I just bought. (Talk about bigger than a breadbox.... But it'd make a decent "Uniform" gun.)

Regards,

Carry either an LB Stinger or a Kimber SIS. Use a Crossbreed Supertuck which can carry either and is pretty comfy.
