I am sure that some have 9mm 1911s that work well, but the gun was not designed for it and some have reliability issues with 1911s in calibers other than 45ACP.

I always ask anyone that is looking at a 9mm 1911...why not a Hi-Power? They were designed (by the same guy) for the 9mm and are very similar and are very reliable and the chances of getting a Hi-Power that flies right all the time are greater than getting a 9mm 1911 that works right. They cost about the same and a nice HP can run less than many 9mm 1911s...so why not a Hi-Power?

The Hi-Power is the most 1911-ish 9mm out there and is a really great shooter.

...thats the route I took...the 1911 is for 45ACP and my Hi-Power is for 9mm...it seems to create less hassles that way.

I have both the high power and 1911 in .45. While the high power shoots great. I like the feel of the 1911. I shot a 9mm 1911 the other day and it just seemed to cycle a little faster and I shot it better. I'm looking for one now.

1911 Clones in 9mm and other calibers have a pretty good history as far as foreign military service pistols go. I love my Stars. That being said, I'd love to own a 9mm 1911, but for all they are; the prices on them are insane. I've also had some experience with the High Powers and reccomend them highly. Try looking into the Charles Daly HP's. You can pick them up for around $300. Pair that with a couple of FN mags and you're in business. Once caveat you should expect though is that the Charles Daly mag will not fall clean from the magwell. The FN (Browning) will fall clean due to the attachment of a spring to create downward tension on the magazine.

I have had mixed results with 1911's in 9mm. They tend to be much more sensitive to having the appropriate spring weight for the ammo being used. That being said, I have two springfield EMP's that are absolutely fantastic as well as a Wilson Professional that is one of my favorite guns to shoot - several others have been more problematic. My first recommendation would be for the EMP - they are great guns, small, light and accurate with very good triggers.

Is the EMP the only 1911 specifically designed around the 9mm cartridge?

Yes, I believe so. That's why 9mm mags for other 1911s won't fit the EMP.

Perchjerk beat me to the difference b/w EMP vs. other 9mm 1911s. I've heard about the reliability issues with 1911s retrofitted to shoot 9mm (i.e. all non-EMPs). But a number of IDPA buddies shoot 1911 9mm (STI, SV, etc.) and I don't see them having any problems. But everybody feels differently. 1911 purists will scoff at a 1911 in 9mm (or a 1911 with a barrel shorter than 4.25").

I will likely be buying an EMP very soon, assuming I can find one of the little suckers.

I would get a 1911-9mm if there are any reasonably priced.

I've been really entertaining the idea of getting an EMP. It's pretty much the only 1911 i'd get in 9mm.

A friend of mine just got a new STI Trojan in 9mm and we shot it on Sunday. That thing is sweet......I will definitely buy one of those when I get the chance....and the money.
