After several months of not going to the range I've been bitten by the bug again. But it's not just the lets go out and shoot the XD9 bug... it's the lets go out and buy something new to shoot along with the XD9 bug.
Anyway it started by me pulling out my old Springfield catalog and seeing that nice black and silver TRP Operator that caught my eye shortly after I got my XD9 Service. Unfortunately these appear to be pricey and hard to find. Local range/gun shop didn't have any. Today I went to another gun shop and found a couple 1911s that I'm interested in. One more so than the others... Essentially there are 2 SW1911PDs. One is the 5" tactical rail model which is all black - this one is about $780. The other is the black w/wood grip commander version for about $755. These are the 2 I'm most interested in - particularly the 5" model (just wish it didn't have the rails...) The 3rd was a Sig GSR for $850 which unlike the others had night sights but the more I read the more I'm ruling this one out. So basically it's quickly coming down to the 2 above. Primarily this will probably replace (or supplement) my XD9 as my home defense gun and be an additional range gun. Not sure if I'll carry it or not since this would definitely require a good IWB holster because my XD is annoying enough in my Smartcarry holster. Printing just isn't an option and the XD Service grip prints like crazy in holsters like my CTAC and leather OWB paddle holster but not really at all in the Smartcarry. Basically what I want to know from you guys is are these S&W 1911s good choices? It'll be the 2nd gun I've purchased and my 1st 1911 so I want to do it right the first time. It just seems like everyone who has more than 1 gun has at least one 1911. I didn't use to like em, but they've grown on my quite a bit. Just seems like the logical next step, unless I want to get an AR15, but that's a whole other can of worms. Depending on the feedback I get here, and what I decide after I sleep on it tonight I might come home with a new gun tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any comments, recommendations, and advice. |

I've only had my XD9 a week and a half and I'm already planning on picking up a stainless GI when I have some money saved back up.

They also had a GI for a couple hundred less. My range had several Taurus guns but I haven't given them much thought.
After thinking about it last night and moving more and more towards the commander model I think I'll hold off for now. I'll get one one day, I just don't think now is the time. I just gotta keep telling myself that. |

I have a PT1911 paid $535 this included 2 Chip Mchormick mags and a CQC holster all new. It has been a sweet gun totally reliable and very accurate (key holes at 15m). It already comes with the basic bells and whistles, you will probably want to upgrade but that will be the case with whatever you buy. My two cents.

SA Mil-Spec 1911A1 is a good first 1911. It was my first and is easy to mod/upgrade. Bottom right; I realized I don't have any single photos of mine. I put Pachmyer grips on it. Shoots awesome.

Like others have said, check into the Springfield GI or milspec, or even the Loaded, depending on the money you want to spend. The Mil Spec will probably be my next 1911 unless under the grace of god i fall into an exorbantly large amount of money in the near future

I'm not a fan of a 1911 with a rail. I bought a Kimber Warrior and I can't find any use for the rail, plus I need different holster for it.
The 1911 bug is terrible. I have 3 now, and want more. If you really want the Springfield TRP, save for it. Once you settle on buying one of the other ones, you'll still want a nicer 1911 like the TRP. So, in the longer run, you will end up saving money. I highly recommend the Taurus PT1911. I bought the stainless version last month for $550 here in Ohio.
