Guess it depends on the gun. I've got a Kimber Custom II with some mods that from day one has had reliability issues. Tried new springs, mags, you name it short of taking it to a gun smith or sending it back to Kimber (which I may have to do) The gun is super accurate and probably the most comfortable weapon I own but I have no faith in it. NOW my springifield 1911 Loaded has some mods but will feed anything i can put in it, I think it would shot rocks if I could load em in the mag. Great gun. So different 1911's might give better/worse results and not make that a fair test. IMHO
Good luck with yours, they are awesome guns.

I have a Colt 1991A1. it eats anything I feed it. I am going to get a 14# recoil spring for it. I have a lady friend that has a problem with recoil. So I'm going to see how light a load will eat with the light spring.

That is what I have a Commander 1991A1, and I currently have a spare Wilson Combat Custom Tune spring kit. If you are interested me pm and we can work some thing out.

The more you tinker with the original JMB design the more problems you are likely to have.
The gun was built with certain tolerances in mind. Tighten up those tolerances and you could well start having problems. That being said a good tight 1911 with adequate lube is a joy to shoot. Being an all steel gun with tighter tolerances than the plastic pistols I highly doubt it would stand up to the type of test that say the XD went through. But what it has gone through is the test of time. |

My TRP Operator is flawless.
I cannot say the same for my PT1991, that I parted with. Nor can I say the same for my G.I. 1911 that I parted with.

As someone else said the original design was the win but everyone thinks they can improve on it and then end up screwing it up.
Now days if you want a pistol that won't choke no matter what you throw at it you have to get the "tactical tupperware". I <3 Tactical Tupperware.

the only reliabilty issue i have ever seen, heard ro felt- was all down to ammunition problems.
i have NEVER had a mechanical malfuntion in the 1911A1.
