I am looking to compare the thickness of a service XD45 against a similar size 4" or 3" 1911 45 as viewed from above looking down and/or possibly as viewed from the magwell looking up.

I have been shoppping the 1911's and am unconvinced as of yet as to a size difference that would be substantial enough to carry instead of the XD45 service. I have been waiting for SA to release the XD45 as a subcompact but I dont think this is going to happen.

I really like the Kimber CDP II Ultra, SIS Ultra, and RCP. The Kimbers feature a 7 round magazine as opposed to a 6 rounder from a comparably sized Springfield Armory 1911.

Can anyone post photos of their pieces for comparison?

I don't have pics, but I can tell you that I "mexican" carry quite a bit and the 1911 is WAY more comfortable than my XD-45. Since the other deminsions are pretty close, I can only contribute it to the width.

My advise would be hit up a gunstore that sells both and give the a good side-by-side comparison.

A 1911 is under 1" thick. As I recall the XD45 is not quite 1.25" thick. I might be able to get some pics up tomorrow morning if someone doesn't beat me to it.

The thing is, the GRIP difference between an XD and a 1911 with standard grip is negligible.

The biggest difference is the thickness of the rest of the gun. The XD is pretty much the same thickness everywhere.

The thickest part of the 1911 is the grip
