1911 n00b here, bought my first, have question!
I picked up a Smith & Wesson SW1911 w/ the crimson trace laser grips today! Gonna hit the range tomorrow. Already broke it down to clean and oil her up. Awesome gun!
Anyhoo, this is my first 1911 and I have a goofy question. Actually a couple... Whenever I pull the slide back with a magazine (empty, duh), the slide release pops up and locks the magazine back obviously. My question on this one is, whenever I pull the slide back and release it, the magazine release catches it again, instead of it releasing forward in a ready to fire position. Is this normal? Does the slide release need to be used to put the gun in a ready-to-fire position? Am I doing something wrong? Second also relates to the same question above. With the slide locked back, does one have to depress the grip safety so that the slide release releases the slide properly? In playing with the gun, it seems as though I couldn't use the slide release to release the slide unless I have the grip safety depressed. Am I crazy or what? |

You need to remove the magazine before the slide will go into battery. The magazine has a little lip on the follower that lifts the slide lock up to lock the slide back. Without the mag in the weapon the slide will move freely forward.

Eh, it should. If an empty mag is in there, you shouldnt be able to drop the slide without manually depressing the slide release.

BTW, it's not the best thing for a 1911 to let the slide go home empty. You can damage the extractor.
If you are not loading a round you are best off to ride the slide down.

Another 1911 don't: Don't drop an individual cartridge into the chamber with the slide open and drop the slide on that. Plays hell on the extractor. Always load from a magazine. |
