kimber 1911 failure to extract

I recently purchaced a used kimber 1911 and when I went shoot the other day I had several fte's and i'm really worried about this... I did notice one of the mags that this was happening on was older and the spring not as tight as another factory mag that came with the gun. I wasn't paying enough attention to tell you if all of my problems came from one mag, or not but I'm worried about reliability of my new .45. Should I get new mags and forget about it? Could it be a serious problem? Could someone please make me feel better about my first 1911? thanks for any help

We could help you more if you would provide a little more info:
a) describe what ammo you were using
b) Provide a photo (or at least more detail description) of the failure
c) let us know which Kimber you were using

I'm assuming this is your first trip to the range with the new pistol...

I was using wwb 230 grain, in a kimber ultra carry, and I have no pics because I could not replicate the problem. Also, this is my first 1911... also have an xd service but I don't know enough about 1911's to describe the extractor, other than I'm pretty sure it is factory. When the failures would happen the slide would come back but for whatever reason, it woud not eject the spent shell, a couple of the times it would try to pick up the next round which would jam the next bullet into the ramp. In all cases the shell would not leave the port, sometimes even going back into the chamber like when it was the last round. sorry I don't have more info, but sadly I didn't have much time to really figure out what was going on

An external extractor would have an extractor that would look like the one on your XD. According to the webside, the Ultra Carry II, has an internal extractor. The problem you describe could be magazine related, or very likely an extractor with not enough tension. You can try this. Put a fired casing in the slide under the extractor. See if it will hold it there. If it won't that is a large part of the problem. You can either try and get another one by ordering it, or take it to a 1911 smith to have it fixed. I am not sure how Kimber support is now for a used weapon, but I would suspect that they won't be of much help. There are plenty of good 1911 smiths that can fix it for you.

I would number the magazines first, and then replicate the issue, and see if it is tied to a particular magazine.

You know, I thought about that the other day while I was cleaning it... how it the extractor should hold a spent shell and I tried this, course the slide was off the frame(I don't know if this should make a difference) but it was far from holding it in place... I already ordered a wilson combat mag, in the hopes that it was my only problem.... hasn't come in yet. Should I go ahead and order a wilson combat extractor also? Or just bring it to a gunsmith? I really like this little gun but if I can't get it function at 100% I'll sell it because I bought it to carry, and I won't trust my life to anything less than 100%.

it's the internal (thanks for the pics, a nice little lesson)

So if the extractor doesn't hold a shell it needs to be changed? because my kimber does not do this... but my xd does...
