THE build....

I have an ar-15 and want a 1911 now.

I don't have the money to just go buy one, so I'm thinking about building it.
What kind of kits are out there for them?
Are they easier or harder than building an AR?
Does somebody have a complete parts list? I have looked at midway lost and don't understand everything that I need.

I'm looking to build a pistol to use in USPSA shooting.

Thank you in advance.

These are not home build projects. If you are set on doing this kind of thing I suggest you get this book.

MidwayUSA - "The Colt .45 Automatic: A Shop Manual Volume 1" Book by Jerry Kuhnhausen
MidwayUSA - "The U.S. M1911/1911A1 Pistols: A Shop Manual Volume 2" Book by Jerry Kuhnhausen

The AGI 1911 dvd.
Amazon.com: Technical Manual & Armorer's Course Colt 1911 .45 Auto Applicablie to all manufactureers, models & calibers: Movies & TV

Patrick Sweeney's books are pretty darn good too.
Amazon.com: The Gun Digest Book of the 1911: A Complete Look at the Use, Care & Repair of the 1911 Pistol, Vol. 1: Patrick Sweeney: Books
Amazon.com: The Gun Digest Book of the 1911: A Complete Look at the Use, Care & Repair of the 1911 Pistol, Vol. 2: Patrick Sweeney: Books

I have built my own 1911 using a Para Alloy frame and essex slide.

I call her the Frankenpara.
She is ugly but she sure can shoot!

This was very hard and took me about a month to finish with simple hand tools and a Foredom flex shaft hand grinder.

There are no bushing holes left on it! I ground them all off. It has grip fillers installed and it feels just slightly fatter than a STI/SVI gun. I make 1in groups at 25yrds with match loaded ammo and it is FUGLY as FUGLY can get!!!

Cool

I like it. I like the high capacity. I like everything you have done. Suggestion; go on line and buy a spray can of this grip Spray. It is to spray on walkways, or truck beds or ramps for wheelchairs. It is spray on, texture.... grip. Tape if a grip area.... spray it on... and it will look like a grip... and provide a good feel. I think it will improve the looks too? just a thought. But basically, i want to do the same build. High cap 45 1911 style. I shot a friend's llama 45 1911 and it was awesome. Some think the llama is garbage... simply not what I experienced. Thanks, Buzz

I use grip tape because I have not had the grip fillers drilled and tapped for the screws that hold them on. I have used the bed liner paint before on my Glock that I did a grip shape job to. This gun takes magazines produced by a company called SPS in Spain that carry 20 rounds of 40SW. If anyone else thinks they can do this please read some of these books and learn about the 1911 system before you start buying parts.

my advice is to not try to fit a barrel on your first 1911 build. you can always come back and fit a nice barrel later. The rest of the 1911 is pretty straight forward. Good luck and post Some pics.

Depends on the barrel.

The Kart easy fit barrel is widely used by hobby 1911 guys. I tried a "drop_in" Ed brown and it locks up very tight in my 45 upper for this gun.
