Thumb break or not?

I am about to order a KD holster for my SA 1911 "loaded" SS. I really like the idea of having a thumb break for a few reasons.

1) it goes under the hammer so "if" it did fall, it wouldn't hit the firing pin
2) it protects the firing pin from getting hit by anything else (not sure if this ever happens or is even possible
3) looks "safer" -- less menacing
4) holds the weapon in place if you have to run -- or do a keg stand for that matter
5) if someone were to get a hold of you, they are less likely to be able to draw your weapon

the thumb break would stick up high so your thumb would naturally unsnap it when you flip the safety.

any one have any opinions on thumb breaks for 1911s?

For me, concealed carry, no thumb break; carrying exposed; yes on some type of retention. I most often use a SERPA.

I have both I really like thumb breaks being in LE it gives a little more security than a open top holster, that being said if you are using a Kydex or molded holster they are not necessary.

No thumb breaks for me, a good molded leather holster will have plenty of retention for CCW applications.

Only thing i do not like about them is that they get in the way when Re-holstering the weapon. Other then that no problems.

True, I hadn't really thought about that. But it's a trade off and reholstering is less critical to me since hopefully it will never need to be drawn in the first place.

I was more thinking: if it's an option, why not have it? what are the downsides?

Yet another movement you'll have to ingrain on the draw. If for CCW, don't bother. If for Open Carry, then sure - get a retention holster.
