1911 Sight question

I got my new SA 1911 Loaded with adjustable sights. They are all black with no dots or anything. This will be my target gun, but I would also like it ready for home/personal defense.

While they are great sights for targets, they simply do not provide quick target acquisition.

I would like to get either white 3-dots, or preferably tritium.

I am torn between adjustable vs. fixed. How much more "accurate" is adjustable?

What would you guys recommend? I am thinking of actually drilling VERY small holes into the rear and front sights, to make a 3-dot pattern, and fill it in with white paint, then clear coat. How difficult would it be to line up an all (sp? -- the thing you hit with a hammer to make a hole before drilling) and make my own 3-dots?

A competent gunsmith may be able to insert tritium tubes into the sights you have.

As for accuracy....for target shooting adjustable sights are much better IMO...you can adjust for different ammo, different distances.

BTW, my 1911 SA "Loaded" (9151) came with all black combat sights. Target aquisition was never a problem. But you can always put a little "white out" or "Testors model paint" on the front sight and that should be enough.

Peace,
D.

My Dan Wesson Pointman Seven has adjustable target sights that are all black. I just need to paint the front sight a bright color or get a fiber optic for the front.

Springfield has a custom shop where you can get tritiium inserts in a Bomar cut slide (which is what I assume you have cut in yours) It is fully adjustable and of course it is from the manufacturer. Unless you are a IDPA or USPA shooter you will not be shooting much beyond 25 yards for self defense so adjustable sights are nice if you really want to shoot target. I would not use an Awl for banging a hole to make a hole due to the fact that you may damgage the slide cut that is already there. Instead you could send the slide to a gunsmith and have him install a Bomar cut tritium set in your pistol or order them yourself and purchase a sight pushing tool and push the old ones out and install the new ones yourelf. Or....just buy some BRight Sights paint and try your hand at being an artist on your sights. Hope this helps Floyd
