PT1911 Range Report
So as some of you know I snagged my first 1911 a few weeks ago. The Taurus PT1911 w. Rail. My initial and uneducated thoughts are.. Damn it's heavy and the grips are nothing to write home about.
Now disassembling a 1911 for the initiated is fairly different from your typical semi-auto. My experience is with XD's, SIG's and other Taurus semi's. Thank god for Google and (never thought I'd say this) YouTube. The barrel bushing wrench's actual use (prior to web based RTFM efforts) was looking seriously like a bottle opener. Given that I have several LaRue Dillo's this object looked destine for the bottom of a storage bin. Smartly, I hadn't gotten to the clean up point when I started the disassembly All said and told when I got her to the range I notice two distinct things about the PT1911. First that weight helped more than expected for return to target during the recoil process. Didn't notice it when I was shooting, but did when I let someone else shoot it. Note that I did have the TLR-1 mounted but you really didn't notice it's added weight like you do on a Poly pistol (read XD45C). Second was that these straight 8 sights just don't work for me at all. While I have them on 2 other weapons and have no real complaints (no real praise either) .. on the PT1911 they're a show stopper. So there's another expense for this bad boy.. and honestly, I shot a Glock 19 in the same outing and while there are a ton of things that don't work for me and Glocks, their sights do. Because I was already frustrated with straight 8's I noticed the Glock sights far more than I had in the past. Just seemed to line up far better and quicker for me. Another decision was that I officially hate the same style of Hogue wrap around grips that have served me so well on my SIG and PT92. So there's yet another expense. After hitting the range and deciding that I do indeed like to PT1911 I snagged 4 Shooting Star 8rnd mags with bumpers, pricier at the store than what we found at Midway USA last week (even with shipping), but it was an impulse buy. The determination on those from my 1911 bigoted buddies is that they are better than the Taurus mags that came with the gun, we'll see how they hold up to heavy shooting later in the Spring. So 100 or so rounds through the PT1911 I think I did pretty good for my 1st 1911. Yup, I say first because I really want a Springfield TRP Operator now as well... but that's going to be later down the road.

You and I are on similar paths. I started with a PT1911, went to a Springfield Mil-Spec, and just picked up a TRP this past week......
1911's are fun, aren't they? Enjoy that PT, it should treat you well. ![]()

I'll never deny that I'm lucky... I've actually gotta be one of the luckiest people I know. Especially when it comes to shooting sports.
