It is MUCH cheaper and easier to buy one built, but that being said, yes they have everything you need if you have a lot of extra time and money.

You would need a FFL to transfer you the frame.

I thought about this once as well. I just don't think I have the mechanical know-how to do that.

I put one together 20 years ago from surplus parts, systema frame, Remington rand slide, usgi parts. Its not really feasable today as the usgi parts that were so plentifull have dried up or quadrupled in price. You can still put one together from parts but it will cost way more than the $250 it cost me for my Sytema/Remington Rand Hybrid

There is a class offered through forum.1911forum.com where you buy the package and go through the course and build your own. Seems interesting.

You can get parts kits and frames for pretty cheap, and build a milspec 1911 for pretty cheap. Of course it'd be wise to have the pistol inspected by a competent gunsmith before attempting to use it.
Parts kits for $187 ---> http://www.sarcoinc.com/cgm.html
Frame for $80 plus shipping & transfer to FFL ---> http://www.sarcoinc.com/handguns.html

= cheap 1911 and experience building one.

This would be great if it was a Commander. But I would do it with a Gvt. as well.

The class on 1911forum is being offered by Larry Vickers. Although expensive, it's a worthwhile investment and you will have built your own pistol under his watchful eye.

Yeah, I'd love to do that someday, but it's something like $6000 or so for the course and (IIRC) parts, travel expenses, food and lodging, etc.

Of course you'd end up with a heck of a pistol, and an amazing amount of knowledge. But you can also buy a whole lot of 1911 for a lot less than half that.

Would be fun though.

Peace,
D.
