1911 selection advice
Ok so I'm toying with the idea of picking up a 1911. I haven't done a ton of research on them but considering virtually every gun maufacture makes a variation of it the research could be a never ending task. So I was wondering some what are some of all your takes on a good one that's easy on the pocket book, I don't need a $1500 + competition match with all the bells and whistles. Or is it that you have to damage your financial situation to get a good one? Like for example the springfield GI base model is it worth it to go that cheap or is it better to keep it closer to the $1000 mark? I really don't know so thats why I'm asking...

I have never fired one, but the Taurus PT1911 has gotten some very good reviews, and it comes with a lot of the stuff already installed that people change on a 1911.

Springfield GI or Mil Spec, RIA Tactical, Kimber custom 2. The list is endless but remember most of the lower end guns will require some tinkering to get to function 100%.

I got a Dan Wesson Pointman Seven recently for $699 and it's all set up with match grade parts and what not. It's very nice. I doubt you'll find a new one at that price, they usually run 750 - 850+ new.

Any 1911 in the $750+ range will be a nice pistol. Some companies do offer better value than others, but 1911 brand debates can go on forever.
In the $750-1000 range I'd stick with Colt, Springfield, Kimber, or STI. Under $1000 you're getting a production pistol, which can obviously have problems. All brands do occasionally. To me, warranty and service are as important as initial quality. From everything I've read, Springfield is tops when it comes to that. The only thing I don't like about Springfield is the ILS safety system. Makes the trigger too stiff for my liking. It's a fairly simple fix though, if you don't mind doing a little tinkering (which is one of the funnest things about 1911's!). If I was going to buy a pistol and keep it stock, it probably wouldn't be a Springer.

http://danwessonfirearms.com/product_detail.php?id=65 It's a great gun - I have run about 300 rounds thru it without a problem. Very accurate too - picture below is from last range trip - at about 15 yards.

I second the Taurus PT1911 for a first or second 1911. Personally, I've had no problems with mine after 500+ rounds including no malfunctions.
I bought mine with the factory Heinie night sights fro $599.
