Is the cheap springer GI a good starter 1911?

I have two guns right now an XD9 Service and Sub compact, I want a 45 and don't have much to spend, Is the cheap springer GI a quality gun, in terms of reliabiltiy?

Thanks in advance...

Yes the Springfield GI is a good start. I would suggest you also consider the Mil-Spec model.

Nothing "cheap" about it...It's a good gun.

i personally decided on the springfield loaded model. the sights on the GI are a bit lower then desired....not to mention there is no dovetail cut in the slide for replacing them. the loaded also has the bigger beaver tail, skeletonized trigger and hammer, novak night sights, etc.

at a recent gun show they had the loaded models for $625....its only a little more then the GI but you get way more.

Is the Springfield 1911 as reliable as my two XD's? I know it is a different pistol, but is it as reliable?

Thanks in advance...

I cc a springfield milspec and trust it with my life. That should say something about their reliability. Especially since I started with a sig and sold it when it constantly malfunctioned.

I also have a SA GI 1911, and trust it as much as I do my XD45; but I carry the latter as 1) it is lighter (albeit a bit thicker) and 2), the 13+1 capacity versus a 7+1. But for a "entry level" 1911, the GI is an excellent choice! I love mine...

Cheers! M2

Nothing cheap about it, aside from the price. It's a damn fine gun. It's actually the first 1911 I've bought (though not the last) and it has been great. It's a great base gun to add what you want, and nothing more. I've added a new barrel bushing, trigger, and new sights to it. In addition, I added a stronger spring, gotten the feed ramp polished, and gotten a trigger job.

Like any gun, it required a break-in period, but now I trust my life to it for home defense. You can't go wrong with a Springfield.
