Quick question on my 1911
I am left eye dominant but right handed. So when I shoot with both eyes open, I just shift my right hand towards my left eye. My shots are pretty accurate but the problem I have is the bullet casing keeps hitting me on my head or right at my eye (I wear glasses). It actually left some scratches on my glasses. Is there something I can do to the 1911 to make the bullet casing eject further away from me?

What kind of 1911 do you have? Is the ejector port lowered and flared?

Do you use a straight shift with the gun vertical, or have you tried a bit of a McMillan cant??

It is a Dan Wesson Commander bobtail and yes, it has lowered and flared ejection port. sspshooter, I am not familiar with straight shift or McMillan cant. Can you explain what they are? |

rl168,
Bill McMillan was cross eye dominant. In the late 1950's while shooting an important match, he discovered that if he canted the pistol 45 degrees it perfectly aligned the sights with his eye opposite his gun hand. He later used this technique to win the Gold Medal for the U.S. in the 1960 Pan-American games. I use this technique when firing weak hand only. Straight was simply referring to if the gun is straight up and down. Just don't tip the gun over too far or your pants will fall down exposing half of your ass, your ball cap will become oversized and twist on your head, your shirt will metamorphose into a wife beater, and you will speak fluent gangsta!!! |

Yes, you can adjust the angle on the ejector to toss the brass at a different angle.
You could also have those ghost ring rear sights added that would allow you to shoot using both eyes open and maybe not have to hold the pistol so far to the left and the cases would miss you altogether. Alot of people that are cross dominant use those ghost ring sights and really like them. For some reason, the Commander sized 1911s DO love to toss brass back and hit you on the forehead more than the 5" 1911s. Why...I do not know. Still, every now and then, my Springfield GI will toss an empty on my forehead but its pretty rare. Both of my Commanders (including the Colt I still own) smacked me in the forehead with empties quite a bit. In my current Combat Commander Colt, I replaced the ejector with a Wilson extended combat ejector and had a Wilson Bulletproof Extractor installed and tuned at the same time. this Colt has a smaller ejection port and now, does NOT hit me in the forehead with empties...nice. Don't let them tell you that it is hitting you on the head because the ejection port is not lowered...that has nothing to do with it. The key is in the relationship between the extractor and ejector and the ANGLE that is on the elector. Again, my Commander has the smaller ejection port (it is a 1973 model) and it no longer tosses anything at my head. Think ejector angle and extractor tension and bevel...those are the keys. - Brickboy240

Brickboy240,
I am interested in your idea of replacing the extractor and ejector. I am new to firearm, do you know if there is a good and reliable gunsmith in Houston that can do this for me? |

Once upon a time long long ago I had a Colt Officer's Model in SS. Never should have sold that gun but we all know that tune.....
That pistol seemed to eject straight back at my forehead right out of the box. Had to take it to the gunsmith to prevent scars from forming.
