Lube them

I was at the range a couple of weeks ago. The guy beside me would shoot a round "D*mn", they I'd here the slide cycle; another round, "D*amn".

This went on for about 5 minutes. I stepped back off the lane to see what was going on.

He was shooting a Springfield Mil-Spec. He'd shoot a round and it wouldn't return all the way to battery. He would hand cycle the slide, fire a round, same thing.

He saw me watching him "Brand new handgun, and it's not working right. I'm taking it back"

"Mind if I take a look at it?"

I broke it down and it was dry. No lube at all.

I slathered it up with some lube I had in my bag and handed it back to him.

Ran like a champ. Suggested he take the time to read the owners manual.

I see this a lot, especially with new AR owners (most of whom don't know how to remove the bolt).

Five minute field lesson and everyone is happy as a clam again.

That is good stuff. I got a free sample from him. I also like to run 15-40 motor oil on my 1911. A quart will last you a lifetime and it doesn't run dry.

A little grease on the slide rails and thats really all you need on a 1911.

Ditto for Glocks. The rumor is that you can run Glock on no lube. Well...not for long! A little grease on the rails is all they need. My Glock 22 hums right along and is 100% reliable with just that and nothing more.

I use Tetra Grease on all my autopistol rails. Grease is best because it stays in place and will not run down the frame in hot weather.

I was taught about using grease on pistols from Dad. He said that they used M-1 Rifle Grease on th rails of their issued M1911A1s all the time an not much more. Dad is a retired USMC MP and carried the M1911A1 for 13 years...I take his word for it!

I also use grease (Slide Glide) mixed with a lighter oil such as FP-10. Grease alone can make your gun start jamming in cold weather, so you have to "dial down" the viscosity with a little oil if it's cold.

Whats cold weather?

LOL

Sorry, I am in South Texas so I only have expereince with lubes in very hot conditions.

I used to be able to get M-1 Rifle Grease in the little yellow pots, from our army surplus stores really cheap. those little jars and a bunch of Q-tips were easy to carry in a range bag or backpack and made for quick, effective lube on my autopistols. Its getting harder to find M-1 Rifle Grease these days. I don't know the chemical composition of that red grease but it works really well.
