I've actually been know to drive into town, walk around the mall, head out on the beach and otherwise "hang" without any firearm at all. I live in a pretty non-threatening environment.
The point I'm making is: Your mileage may vary. I've also been known to carry an 45 XD Tactical in the car, with two mags and a laser sight, a 32 ACP backup in the console, .357 snub in my pocket and a 12 gauge in the trunk. Oh yeah . . . Cold Steel "Peace Keeper II" double edged. Didn't need them, but this is America, and it's legal.

(Don't swing it like a club, much more effective when "jabbed" -- hard to block a jab.) Most of the time I don't feel a need to be "heavily armed." I think the NAA Guardian, 7 rds 32 ACP is a bit "under gunned" but it beats no gun, and I'll carry it -- whereas I won't carry a 45 ACP, .357, or 9mm despite having several of each. -- Never been mugged, punched, robbed, etc., and we're way past not being young any more.

Kimber Ultra Raptor, 24 oz empty and accurate as hell, with a Wilson Mag, and a gem to conceal.
Second choice Glock 36, newer ones, only 6+1 but conceal pretty well. |

Or you can just get a Para P14 and carry 14+1 in your 1911 double stack. The receiver's a little wider but so what, unless you have tiny hands it shouldn't matter.

Secondly how well a pistol fits your hand is very important and will help you shoot better. Double stack 45's don't fit most people that well. Single Stack guns fit better for most people and with grip modifications can be made to fit almost anyone. You can only make a Para's grip so so small. How well you shoot the gun will matter in a gun fight far more than having 15 rounds vs 9 rounds. Most gun fights are decided well before 9 rounds have been fired. If a double stack fits you well and you have a reliable one then by all means carry it. But I prefer the single stack design and that is what I will carry. Many well respected agencys and people agree with me. Like Delta, Marine Force Recon, FBI's HRT, LAPD SWAT and so on. Pat |

going back a few pages here....to the gent that said "give the criminal what he wants and hel leave you alone" studies show that your chances of survival are far greater if you fight in a situation like this....granted i would probably comply first (depending on the situation, wallet, cash, etc.)
legally...in ohio anyway, there are 3 things that you need to prove before you can justify shooting. 1. means (knife, gun, bat, pipe, huge mother fu*$@r) 2. opprutunity (robbery, rape, mugging) 3. Intent ("im gonna kill you" "give me your money or il kill you" etc.) if you can prove those 3 things then there are no worries. back on topic....i carry an xd40 service 12+1 then an additional 12 round mag. 25 speer gold dots should be enough. |

Wouldn't just holding #1 in a threatening manner (muzzle/blade pointed at you, bat in position ready to swing) qualify for #3? Hell, even having any of #1 within 21 feet seems to qualify as #3 to me.
