replacing the ILS on S.A. 1911's
does anyone here have a good couple of how-to pics on how to replace the safety-key mechinism i think its called ILS and replace it with a reg mainspring housing? I just would like to get rid of the key mechinism. It seems fairly easy , but i havent ever really broke down a 1911 before . I also heard that Springfield's have springs and such that are a tad bit different than other 1911's .Is this true? Also any good pics on how to do this?

You will need to change the mainspring cap, mainspring cap pin, mainspring and mainspring retainer along with the new mainspring housing. There are lots of sources for these parts.
See your owner's manual for directions on how to do this. They also have a picture. |

Just make sure that your sear spring is on the sear and not under it when you put it back together. Its VERY easy to replace a MSH if you can push a pin out and then push it back in.

Do you just want to get rid of the lock? Or are you going for better parts?
If you just don't want the lock on your gun, I'd just leave it. I never use it and it doesn't get in the way or affect the gun in any way. Here, by law we have to have a trigger guard and locked away so the factory lock is redundant. I'll get rid of mine when it's time to upgrade the internals but it seems a lot of parts you have to buy right now if you just don't want it there.
