Angry Help! Broken 1911!

Well,

I'm beside myself. A while back I acquired a Colt Lightweight Commander XSE. Over the ensuing months I found that I rather enjoyed this firearm, enjoyed it enough that it eventually migrated to being my primary bedside piece and my semi-primary carry piece.

Well today the unthinkable happened....I don't have to tell you, I'll show you.

That large gaping hole, thats where my ambi-safety USED to be. I was out shooting with a friend today when the right side, then the left side sheared off completely....no warning...no hairline fracture (I inspect my guns carefully after each and every shoot). It just.....broke.

I dont even know what to say!

Should I send it to Colt...will they honor this sort of fix under their warranty...I hope so?

I understand the ambi safeties aren't hard to install, I could order the part and do it myself or have my local gunsmith install it.

After it's repaired can I place my trust in this gun again? The last thing I want is a gun that will fail (or even worse grenade) in my hands when the time comes to use it.

I don't know...needless to say I am NOT happy.

Advice....anyone?

I don't want just the frame! I want the whole thing! Oh, wait....did you want it back?

Colt is usually pretty good with stuff like this even if you are a 2nd owner. But, you'll never know if you don't call. Never hurts to try!

p.s. don't kill me!

What do you mean by sheered off? Can you elaborate?

Sure, loaded magazine, made ready. Fired 2 shots...felt something strange on right side of hand, assumed that bug had landed on hand....2 more shots...felt somethng strange fall past left side of fingers....looked down...Thumb-piece on safety had broken off and fallen out of both sides.

I think by seeing the pics that you can get a new safety and fit it your self, for that matter a local smith could probably do it reasonable. Get a Ed Brown replacement or Colt original but they be MIM by now where the Brown or even Wilson will be a machined part.

I'd give Colt a call. They might want to do an inspection on the handgun.

Let Colt fix it, then carry it. It's no different from trusting you car after you get the brakes fixed.

Don't trust colt

I wouldn't trust colt to fix it. They sent out over 2000 rifles that were out of spec over tightend and out of warrenty to USSOCOM, CAV, MP's and other units that were deployed. That is how they lost the contract to FN-USA. Colt knew the rifles were wrong and not ready to ship but did it anyway. A friend of mine deadlined 91 rifles because you could grab the barrel and it would wiggle even though it was 20 lbs past max torque. I'm not say they would fix your pistol. I'm just say if they did that to our soldiers then why would they care about one little pistol. I would have a local gunsmith put some decent parts in it instead.
