New or mod'd used?
I've been interested in a 1911 lately and after doing some searching on line I went to my local shop and checked out some they had in stock. They had a SA GI that I liked but I've been looking into the Loaded model. I took a look at a few others and asked for a price for a new 5" loaded parkerized model. He gave me a price of $1045 +tax etc. Then he showed me a used Colt with lots of modifications for $1100.
I took a look at it and I really like it after thinking about it for a little bit. I know it has an adjustable trigger pull, adjustable rear sight (forget the brand but he made it sound like it was a high quality company) a beaver tail that curved up around the hammer, ring hammer, and checkered texture around the front and rear of the handle (not sure what thats called) and I'm sure with all those mods it has a matched barrel and the internals have been tweaked. He said its about 20 years old but it comes with 3 mags and a nice holster/belt with mag pouches. The slide is blued and the frame is stainless. Overall it looks like a great gun but I'm still new to 1911's so I don't know what to start looking for but the only thing that makes me want a new is that I don't know how many rounds have been through it (probably a lot) and if anything is prone to breaking etc. I'm not sure how much info he has on the gun itself either. So what do you guy think? Should I look into the Colt or would I be better off getting a new SA with some room for adding to it? |

Find a different shop would be my first response..
You can damned near get a TRP for $1100.00 I have not seen a used, 20 year old Colt 1911 worth $1100.00 to be honest. Check out this on GB: http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=75851334

Geez!!! That one went for $725!!!
I'd like to get one online but I'm not too sure about all the laws and fees and everything. I'll try and get to another shop this weekend and see what they have and suggest. |

I agree, that's way too much for a "Loaded". You should be between 7-800.
For a new 1911 shooter I'd say buy a new one, there is just too much to look for in a "Custom" gun. You're setting yourself up to get ripped off or buy a problem child. At least with a new gun if you can ship it back to the factory if you have problems. Springfield is okay, Kimber is good, if I were you I'd check out S&W. They've go the best customer service out there if you have a problem call, they'll send you a pick up tag, fix your gun and send it back. With Springfield you ship your gun back to them with a receipt for the shipping cost and if they decide to they will mail you a check for up to $50 in a couple weeks. |
