Failure to Feed w/ New STI Duty One

A die hard XD fan, I picked up my first 1911 a few days ago after waiting about 5 months for it to get built.

Love the trigger and the feel. Shoots a lot more accurately than my XDs. The problem is functionality. About every 8 rounds (or once per mag) I get a failure to feed. It's like the round is getting hung up on the feed ramp.

I've been using new 230 gr. FMJs so far, and the gun has about 350 rounds through it.

Any ideas? Any commentary is appreciated.

Thanks.

Keep shooting. The famed 1911 doesn't generally shoot right out of the box, it has to be "broken in".

What magazines are you using??

Before you get too worried you should try a couple different magazines. I like Wilson 47Ds, Metalforms are supposed to be good, CMC power mags are okay. Take your pick but try one or two new mags and see if that fixes the problem.

Mags

I've been using the one mag that came with it plus two Chip McCormick mags (shooting star models I think). The problem happens will all three mags.

That's probably the right answer. Just check out the feedramp for any big rough places thought.

My TRP took about 100 rounds to get settled in.

It will probably go away with break in, but a ramp and throat polishing would probably cure it immediately.

Also: have a pro check your extrator hook/tip face for contour and check the tension. Funky extractors are notrious for making 1911's feed cranky.

If you waited 5 months for it to get built, then I guess they should've done it right. I'd send it back & voice you're dis-satisfaction....A dirty or badly fouled chamber can cause feed problems but you state it only does it about every eighth round. Try just loading 7 rounds & see if it continues.

STI wont even talk to you till you get 500 rounds through the gun, but they have top notch customer service. Your gun is built to very tight tolerances and may require some breaking in. Its not a sloppy built assembly line gun. They WILL make it right with you, It may be the ramp needs polished, or the mags are an issue. Try a wilson 47D and keep shooting it. Also try different brands of ammo and run the gun WET with oil.

I have an STI 1911 and it has been flawless, except for the extractor slipping off the case rim once. I chalked it up to a bad piece of brass and it hasent done it again in the last 800 rounds.

Ditto what Ichy said,

Shoot 100 rounds, re-oil, shoot.

At 500 rounds, field strip the gun, clean, reoil and continue shooting.

If the problems persist, try new magazines.

OK, guys - thanks for all the input. I've gotten a couple of Wilson 47 mags in the mail. As soon as I can get to the range and try those out, I'll let you know if this has solved the issue.

Fingers crossed . . . .
