Rust On Brand New SS TRP

So I put my SS TRP in my safe and went on a trip for a few days.

I came home and I had small rust spots inbetween the rear cocking serrations.

Is it common for even a stainless to get rust spots?

I cleaned it with some Hoppes, Q-Tips, and a rag but I still see very faint spots.

I'm not too worried about it but would like to not ruin a brand new gun long term.

That's pretty quick, but it is not uncommon for stainless to rust.

Like Salty said it's not unusual for stainless to orange up under the right conditions. I store my long term stuff soaked in Kroil as its a penetrant oil and will seep into tne pores of the metal. I have several stainless pistols notably 5 XD BiTones and thats what I use on them.

Yeah after researching on 1911forums I did the oil/toothbrush cleaning and it seemed to work fine.

There are very fine marks but I think they will come out with some white vinegar or some more oil and brushing.

If it is noticable after that I will use some scotchbrite.

I was reading that steel wool can make it worse because of contaminents but luckily I don't think I need to go that far.

Disaster has been averted.

Lesson to SS gun newbies, they will rust

Funny that my XD is my workhorse and I haven't cleaned it for 3-4 range sessions and she cleaned up perfectly.

+1 for Kroil. I use it on all my firearms. Got to be careful and wipe it off. In my experience it [Kroil] tends to get like honey when left in quantities out in the air.

But the uses do not stop at firearms. My neighbor spent 3 days trying to free the front rotors from hit son's car. He beat those things with sledge hammers, etc. I went over and gave him a can of Kroil. He let is soak over night and the next day the rotors were off in about 20 minutes.

YES. There are hundreds of different formulae for stainless and some rust quite badly. To prevent galling, gun makers must use different blends for the slide and frame. If I recall, getting increased hardness and high tensile strength requires a blend that is more prone to rust. The more rust resistant blends are gummier when you try to cut them, and not as hard.

Steel wool may leave fine residue which will rust itself....

Q-TIP with some auto chrome polish is good. It's made to remove rust with very low abrasion.

It's ruined. Give you $50.00 for it.
