Sub $600 1911 Shootout
So which one would make a better range/fun/visitor gun for under $600?
An STI Spartan or the Taurus PT1911? |

I would say the Spartan as it has the adjustable sights. I have also heard one or two folks say they have had the front sight come loose on their PT1911. I am not sure if the Taurus uses a dovetailed front sight or not. I know the Spartan does. From their sight it looks like a Hi-Viz one too.

The Spartan has LPA adjustable sights (dovetailed front and rear). The front sight is fiber-optic, but it's not as fine of a fiber as, say, a Dawson precision.
Considering the fact that I've seen both guns selling for about the same price, I'd go with the Spartan (I have one). The PT1911 is a VERY nice gun, and if you can find a deal on a used one, they can be had cheaply (I'm trying to scrounge up for one right now I really don't think you could lose either way. |

I said in my previous post that the Spartan's sights were dovetailed, front and rear. While that is true, it is a bit misleading. The rear sight is a Bomar cut (but it is a dovetail of sorts).
I might have Scott install some Dawson's on it when I send it in to have the trigger slicked-up this winter. |

I'd go with the Spartan, since I have a Taurus.

No Rock Island? I outshoot 95% of everyone at the range with mine, and now that my mags are tuned, it's 99% reliable.

Think you answered your own question there.
Why would you need to tune magazines? And what the heck does that mean anyway? I have never had to touch any of my magazines for any of my 1911s.

STI, they have an excellent reputation for making fine 1911's.
