Shot a Springfield TRP

Wow

I don't currently own a 1911 but I have been trying as many as I can.

Today a RO pulls out his TRP and offers it to me and my buddy to shoot.

I put 5 rounds in about a 1-2" group at 50 feet.

I don't think I have ever shot that good in my life.

I think I found my new 45.

Glad you like it...BUT before you go out and spend major bucks expecting the same thing, just be aware that you need NOT spend that much money to get a good group.

i.e. I got a very rough Colt .45 series 70 in on trade. The safeties were all messed up, as were a few other things, and it had been gone over by a few "garage" gunsmiths and it looked like crap.

I got it running safely and reliably with a few hours and about 35 bucks in parts. I also did a SMALL amount of work on the lockup doing a fitting at the bushing, which had been changed out to a tight bushing (a micro) by a previous owner. I also conditioned the barrel.

It now shoots groups where all the rounds touch one another at the same distance as the TRP you shot and the gun's net worth is less than 25% of what you would pay for a TRP.

Anyways, the TRP is a classy pistol, but even crappy looking 1911's will shoot well if put together with some care and forethought.

Yea if its a tight fitted gun it should perform, on the flip side you can spend major duckets and not have a gun that shoots groups like that.

Thumbs up First try on a TRP? Lucky you!

A RO with a TRP. Well, that sounds like me. I'm waiting to get my RO qualifications to buy one but that's just as treat to myself.

Seriously, most 1911 owners will tell you, that you don't need to spend major $$$ for your first 1911. Even my Loaded Target model was a treat and I could have saved a few $ with a cheaper model and added a few parts and get the same results. It's a mid-range model with a lot of the good features already on it.

It just depends on what you want. Springfield, Kimber, Para and the others all make more expensive models but their cheaper models by no means mean cheaper in quality or accuracy.

Best advice for the 1911, go for what you like and what feels good and what makes you feel good about whichever model 1911 you like best and really want. As long as it's one of the higher quality manufacturers then you shouldn't have any regrets. The rest can be added later if need be.

Case in point: the GI model is Spingfield's cheapest ($ wise) 1911 and I still want one!
