The Auto Ordnance WWII Model 1911A1 is (according to the company) built from the last set of blueprints prior to that conflict. GI surplus parts are a direct swap. This is a good thing because A/O's small parts often suck. Still, many have reported good results with these guns in recent months and even if you have a few problems, the 1911 ain't hard to work on. I've been all through mine and am happy with the end product.

I handled a newer Auto Ordinanace 1911 not too long ago. The fit and finish had gone up a TON. Kahr now owns Auto Ordinanace and the upsurge in quality is showing. The older Auto Ordinance 1911s were junk, but the newer ones sure look nice.

That said, the Rock Island 1911s are nice and very affordable and their customer service seems to be as good as Springfield. The RIA might be a little more "mil-spec" than the Springer GI.

However, if you like the Springer GI, go for it. Mine has been more reliable than either of my old Colts and about as accurate.

I have the Springer GI Govt and love it. Sure, the main reason I bought it was because of the WWII looks (I am retired military and spent a lot of time in Europe at WWII sites when I was in). The thing reminds me of what Tom Hanks carried in Saving Private Ryan! The nice thing is it shoots like a champ! OK, maybe not as well as the $1200+ models some guys own, but for something with stubby little sights on it, I am surprised at its accuracy. Overall it is a sweet gun, you won't be dissappointed for what you get for $500!

Cheers! M2

ok, twin pines from my understanding only imports them. this site is not going to give you much. but they have a listing of the RIA 1911s they import under the brands section of the page. every RIA i have ever seen has come through twin pines. i suggest e-mailing them for more information.

is the GI or Mil-spec model a decent 1911 for what I'd call a beater gun? not one for abuse, but not the fancy smancy really nice looking gun for the range?

something that some wear marks, etc. aren't going to be looked at as blemishes?

+1. The RIA base model is a MILSpec gun. You probably won't get much closer to the original GI gun without doing some time travel or getting one from a real GI.

I have a RIA tactical and a 38 super. Both are awesome.

Check out Sarcoinc.com for some really good prices. For the tactical, Bellshire on Gunbroker has them for $425 shipped. I got mine from him and it was a very quick and smooth transaction.
