If I reword the original question to: "What kind of 1911 should I carry ?" , then the answer, for me, is anything aluminum framed.
I am looking for a (single stack) Commander in decent condition. I am more than willing to rebuild it if the frame is still in good condition. These are considerably lighter than a steel framed gun, and no matter how "buff" you are, you will feel the difference at the end of a day. I also have carried in the past, an aluminum framed para. It was one of the first run of frames from 1988, when you got to build up the gun from it. Para had not yet made full guns. The frame is so old that it does not have a logo on the grips. It still works fine and seems to weight (fully loaded) about the same as a steel framed single stack fully loaded. If I cannot find the Commander, I am also considering building up a gun a Caspian titanium frame. I have a Taurus 85 in titanium that is really accurate and, of course, seems to weight very little, and the titanium 1911 single stack certainly seems appealing. |

Here is my much loved Kimber Pro Carry II:
I replaced the original (nylon) mainspring with a S&W aluminum one. Changed out the grips to Carbon Creation Ultra Slim Double Diamond grips. This pistols feels great and lies flat against the body. The grips are almost as thin as the slide. I like the smooth front strap, easy to grip and indexes very fast. Bottom line - it goes BANG evey time and is ACCURATE I have a few more minor mods I would like: new sights and an ISMI recoil spring conversion (flat like a Glock spring and lasts for several thousand rounds).

IMHO I'd say quality is about the same. SAs are a few hundred less depending on the model you buy.
