My father has a Colt 1911 model 70 he bought in 1973, that only HAD 2 rounds through it. I managed to coerse him into letting me take it to the range on Sunday. Well, I only put 8 rounds through it, for a whopping total of 10 rounds in 34 years. It does shoot very smoothly, has a fair amount of weight, and does not recoil very much. It really was a pleasure to shoot. Thankfully, it's left to me when all is said and done.

You're about to enter a world of sh!t. The more questions you ask, the quicker you'll get the fever.
I would suggest that if you're looking, you had better be prepared to buy one. You are already getting the fever.

Recoil
Brickboy240 said it, it is a push not a snap in your hand. Also there are a lot of things you can do to the 1911 to lower the recoil. Trust me you will love the 1911 I have 12 of them.

If you've ever fired a .357 magnum the 1911 has comperable recoil to a 6 inch barrel .357 magnum revolver.

It kicks like hell and will rip your arm clean off!
Or maybe not. Recoil is really subjective. I know some women shooters who shoot .45s and .44 Mags all day and enjoy it. I know some guys that whine about a .38 Special. It is something you have to try and learn to deal with. It may not bother you at all. Most shooters can learn to handle whatever they decide they like to shoot. |
