Guys,

I'm thinking about getting another 1911 and I'm looking hard at the Springfield Mil-Spec in Stainless Steel. I've heard that stainless guns don't have as tight of a slide to frame fit as other steel guns. Does anyone have any input on this?

My reasoning for the SS Mil-Spec is that I can fit parts without needing a refinish. I have a frind who can mill some dovetails for good sights, and I'm confident I can do a lot of work myself (Beavertail Grip Safety, better Thumb safety, Trigger Job, fitted bushing). This would be a project gun and I would build it up over time. I don't want to have to wait for a refinish before I can carry/test it at each stage of the build.

Any thoughts or experiences with a completely stainless gun would be greatly appreciated!

Stainless guns are just as tight as other steel. Take a look at dan wessons and les baer's for example, they both have a reputation for being very tight and needing a break in period. That includes stainless which right now is all dw makes in 1911.

the milspec i saw at my local carters was bad ass.. but (always one) the front sight is dinky, and hard for me to see except against a light/bright background

and cant be changed out.. they want $549 for it.. i'd jump all over it if not for that.

I have a Springfield S/S 1911 mil spec. It is a beautiful shiny handgun. I use the Chip McCormick 10 round mags. Only problem I have with it is constantly making fingerprint smudged on the smooth shiny surface of the slide.

I have a Kimber Custom Stainless II. It's well made, needed a break-in period, is still tight, and shoots like a tack driver.

Well from what I have read not many gun smiths accurize SS guns you would be better off with a parkerized 1911 if you are going to do that
