Hard Chromed Colt XSE LWT CDR
I just got this back from Mahovsky's today and I'm very happy with how it came out. This is a list of what I did to it:
Wilson Combat Beavertail Wilson Combat Tactical Thumb Safety Ed Brown Snakeskin bobtail msh Ed Brown GI Guide Rod EGW Angle Bore Carry Bevel Thick Bushing EGW Solid Thick Guide Rod Plug Greider Short Trigger I did all the work including the bobtail myself and am very happy with how it came out. I will add that it was flawless out of the box, but I just made changes to suit myself: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks guys. The trigger was like butter before, but it's kind of gritty now. That's understandably as I expected to have to re-stone the trigger, hammer, sear and other places after plating. If nothing changes my mind I see hard chroming in the future for any 1911's I get. For the aluminum frames like this one it changes the hardness on the rockwell scale from 15 to something like 70 or 80 and that pretty much gets rid of any aluminum ramp concerns. It also keeps the bead blasted look while no longer being easy to scratch. I had them bead blast everything, to blend in the new bobtail and grip safety, except for the sides of the slide so they would still have the shiny look. I think it looks much better than stainless and will not rust at all. I know I'm tooting a horn, but I like the way it came out a lot. Mahovsky's only charges 130 for a complete automatic or 140 for aluminum framed ones because it gets nickle plated first. They do everything but the springs and I say it's money well spent.
I plan on picking up a Dan wesson cbob next, and I also see a Springer milspec and Rock Island govt in the future I will "personalize" and have hard chromed. Last edited by saltysquid : 02-01-2007 at 02:28 PM. |

Yea, all of us old folks on social security are rich. I sold other guns for this one and money was why I did the work myself. I also have to save for the next ones and will take quite a while. I think the hard chrome was the best 145.00 I spent though. I realize you are probably just joking any, just had to explain I'm just one of the po people.

Nice piece. It looks fantastic!
I'd really like to hard chrome my 1973 Combat Commander. The satin nickle finish has yellowed over time and looks terrible. A good shooter, though. If you don't mind me asking, about how expensive is it to hard chrome a Commander sized 1911? - Brickboy240

Thanks Brickboy. Mahovsky's has the cheapest prices around of well known platers and they charge 130.00 for a non aluminum frame semi-automatic's. You would need to add 15.00 to it to strip the satin nickle off of it. So 145.00 for the whole gun would be the price and that's not bad. They do everything except springs and sights. The satin finish actually detracts from those guns in my opinion and this is actually a really reasonable way to turn it into a beauty. They bead blast before finishing (no extra charge) so everything is the same texture, unless you want something polished first so it is shiny. They bead blasted everything on mine except the sides of the slide as I told them to leave that shiny or they could have blasted that also. Just make sure you change out anything you plan on changing before having it done. I'm sure you already know that though.

Wow, that is cheap. He is much cheaper than Tripp Research. Also, after Tripp Research screwed up the finish on a $1200 TRP in the beginning of 2006, I don't think I would ever use them again. I even sent it back a 2nd time and it was no better coming back again.
I love hard chromed slides on polymer guns, but refuse to use Tripp again. I'll have to try these guys out 1 day |

I have to say I am very happy with the job done on mine. UPS screwed up badly and it was a week late getting here, I thought it was lost for good, but it showed up. That wasn't Mahovsky's fault though. I highly recommend their work and would definitely get another done, in fact I probably will.
