1st Range Trio - RIA 1911 Tactical

I thought I would throw this out there for those interested in the Rock Island pistol. I just bought mine on Gunbroker (from Bellshire - great seller) for $425 to my door. I field stripped, cleaned and oiled the gun as soon as I got it. I finally got the chance to shoot it last night at the local indoor range. This is my first hand gun and only my second time shooting (shot a 9mm the previous weekend).

Gun: RIA 1911 Tactical
Ammo: 100 rds WWB - 50 rds CCI Blazer
mags: 1 armscor 8 rd(came with gun) - 3 colt 7 rd mags

I had no failures to report. Everything went very smoothly. The only problem I had was the shooter. I did have a few instances where the slide was not back after the last round was fired i.e. it was not slid back on the slide stop. I think it was happening with the colt mags. I forgot to clean/oil them before using them so that may have been the cause. Overall, I am a very satisfied customer.

Here's a silhouette from 15 yds:

Forgot to add: Obviously I need more shooting practice. From close range, I was doing very well. But from 15yds, I was sporatic (as seen in the pic above). I think I have a flinch that is causing this. Practice makes perfect...

Always good to hear first-hand range reports. You may already be familiar with this little technique, but to see if you have a flinch, have a shooting buddy load up a magazine with a combination of real rounds and a couple snap caps, and make sure he doesn't tell you where the caps are. Shoot the gun like normal, and see if you have excessive movements like flinches when the cap goes "click". Videotaping your shoots is a good way to notice this stuff, too. Keep us posted.

ETA: Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the tip. I plan on shooting this weekend and using the "thumbs forward" grip. I've watched a few videos and read a bunch about it. I'm hoping it will help me fix the problem. BTW, here is a pic. My fiber optic front sight and new grips should be here tomorrow I'll post up some pics after installing them (the sight is being professionally installed).

Focus on the front sight, squeeze the trigger, CONTINUE to focus on the front sight (target will be fuzzy, rear sight will be fuzzy), When the gun goes off, continue to focus on the front sight and get back on target. Call your shot (tell your shooting partners where the front sight was when the round went off) check your target and see if you called it correctly. This along with the mix of live and dummy round drills will help eliminate flinch and improve accuracy.

I have a couple more hundred rounds through it and it has yet to do it again. I sold the colt mags and got some mec-gar ones. They have performed flawlessly along with my armscor mags.

You have probably seen it before, but you should dry fire that pistol as well. That will help out quit a bit.

Oh, and congratulations.

Linkinlog what the heck are you doing over here?? Get back to the 1911.org forum ......and get rid of those colt mags and get you some nice 47d Wilson combat mags. They work fine in my Armscor enhanced model. Floyd
