tooless guiderod

does anyone use this thing?

i just got mine and i don't get it. i see that i can remove the bushing now without having to break down the guide rod but that was possible becuase the guide is shorter than the two piece stock guide rod. i'm curious now what that spring lever is for. the one that catches/holds the spring plug.

sorry, i'm a little new to 1911's. the one thing i don't like about this thing is that the guide rod is not flush with the spring plug when the slide is forward which i think doesn't look good. if i wanted a tooless guide rod, couldn't they have just made my guiderod shorter, i think it would have been cheaper. am i not using this thing right?

thanks

I am pretty sure you lock the slide open, push and hold the little lever, slowly release the slide, and the gun will be easier to take down. This style guide rod just keeps the spring captured so you don't have to compress it to install it.

huh. Never seen one of those. Maybe it would keep me from putting dents in my ceiling and having to wear safety glasses when I reassmble my 1911.

i figured out why there's now real benefit for me regarding this tooless guiderod. it seems that you have to have a 1911 which allows you to remove the guiderod/spirng from the rear. the way this thing works on the right type of gun is, you pull the slide back then lock the guide rod. as KOL said, it makes it easier to take the slide lock pin out. once out, your forward the slide off. Then you pull the guide rod off from underneath the gun (backwards).

On the SA's, this is a problem. SA 1911's, at least the loaded, doesn't allow the spring plug to come out backwards. it has to go out of the front of the gun. So when i was using this thing, i didn't see the benefit. i had to regardless press the plug and then spin the busing. Once spun, like all other 1911's, you can then take all the components out of the front.

For SA 1911 owners, you can actually save money and just get a one piece guiderod which is about 1/4" shorter and still have a tooless guiderod. The intent of this tool cannot be realized by my gun.

I purchased this toolless guide rod for my SA TRP Operator. When I take apart my top end, previously I needed a piece of a paper clip to insert into the hole on the guide rod so that it would allow me to pull the bushing out with the guide rod.

Now I just compress the spring on the guide rod and push down on the lever to lock the guide rod to the bushing. Do not have to mess with the cut piece of paper clip anymore.

Only pertains to certain 1911's.

just got work from Dawson, this tooless is not supported by, or at least has no benefits for the SA loaded.
