send it to novak?

i am considering sending a colt series 70 i have had for a while to novak and make it into a combat 1911. i figure that buy the time im done with it, it will be around 1200-1300, just in the work done by novak. i then go to thinking that i could have another gun for that much money. if you suggest a new gun what would it be.

If I was going to send one off to be gone through it would probably be to yost-bonitz and let ted yost do it instead of Novak. Something like his #1 at 995.00 which is less than you quoted. It would also be better than ANY 12-1300.00 gun you could get.

IF you were to decide to just get another gun I think the Rock River Arms Basic carry is the best deal on a custom top end gun for the price of 1,555.00 retail. Probably cheaper on the street. I think they are well worth the couple hundred more you pay than any 12-1300 dollar gun out there. In the long run the couple hundred more would be worth it. The guy that was doing this was supposed to be affiliated with or partners with les baer at one time and people say they are as good as baers with a better finish. If you get it from RRA there's a 6 month wait.

The Les Baer thunder ranch special next probably for a couple hundred more.

If you check 1911forum both ted yost's #1 package and rock river arms are very well thought of.

He will do about anything, you should talk to him. There are also other packages there that you might like more like the #1 enhanced.

In my opinion Yost is much better than Novak. I've even seen where people have said they got bad sight cuts from Novak, I wouldn't have them do my whole pistol. I like their sights, I would just let someone else install them. I think there are actually a lot of good ones out there, like Wilson Combat also. I have seen no complaints at all though on ted yost's work and would probably use him if I wanted to get a package deal, lot of work on a gun. Otherwise I do it myself. If you are set on novak though do what ever makes YOU happy.

My suggestion? Go to this forum in the gunsmith section and ask who they would recommend for doing a "makeover" on a colt and see what these guys say. While you are at it ask opinions on ted yost. Many of them are gunsmiths themselves and you will probably get several good selections to research:

Cool, just wanted to make sure you get more input than just from me. It's good to get plenty of opinions and then sort through them. Sounds like you are doing it that way anyway.

Whichever way you go share your experience and the pics of the finished product with us. If I had the bucks I would love to send a basic colt to be "worked over" into a yost job.
