The sear, mag catch and disconnector which are the mim parts are all cheap and easy to change out to get rid of the mim.

Wilson combat deluxe a-2 sear 21.95

wilson combat factory plus disconnector $14.29

Wilson combat Magazine catch $15.95

It's 636.26 for a new government model or commander either one:

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/36291

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/36335

If you add the 52.19 for these easy change parts it's 688.45 for either a brand new govt or commander mimless. I would still go that over 500.00 for a used 70 series, but even then you would have to make sure this 70 series was made before they went to mim. They still make the series 70 (at least in govt) and Better take a look at your parts on the 70's series commandes to see if that 70 series was made after they started using mim. If so it probably has some mim in it. Even then finding a used commander for 500.00 is not easy, if it were easy I could go to gunbroker, gunsamerica or auction arms and find some at that pice. The only used colts I have seen locally are priced higher than new ones from Buds. OK. If I could find a like new one for 500.00 then I would probably go that route. Finding 500.00 ones is pretty rare and like new ones even more so. If you check the auctions sites most want new prices for them.

Either way brickboy one should do what they are happy with. That's just my opinion and I would save the extra 188. for a new one (including de-mim) that I new someone wasn't selling for problems. Everyone should do whatever makes them happy though.

That being said I am very much leaning toward a S&W 5". I would be using a government as cold weather concealed carry and a 29.5 oz government is just plain sweet. Wish colt had one. I could change out mim a little at a time for a 5" carry piece at that weight. That's only about 5.5 oz heaver than the 24oz lwt colt officers that will be my main carry piece. Big difference from lugging around 38oz (give or take) in a steel frame. Yes, mim parts but most are cheap and easy to change out. Gotta love that weight for concealed carry though.

I loved my Kimber Eclipse Target II. I traded it for an AR. It shot better than I did. The looks of the gun is fantastic and it came with adjustable night sights. It's all stainless and isn't a lightweight. The shop still has it and they're asking $850 for it.

Wow...those are VERY GOOD prices on new Colt 1911s. Even the best shops around here sell those versions for well over 700 bucks.

Yeah...thats a great way to go at that price.

I just prefer the basicness of the Colt 1911s, combined with their finish quality. I like putting my work on the internals of the 1911 rahter than on external cosmetic items. The Colt M1991 line and the Series 70NRMs are in keeping with simple but well made 1911s.

In all my years of shooting 1911s, I have just not found a use for front cocking serrations, skeletonized hammers, full length guide rods, frontstrap stippling, lowered/flared ejection ports and all the other add-on doo dads on the newer 1911s. None of my 3 1911s have this stuff and they all work just fine.

The same here local shops are much higher, even on used ones. The local guy that works on colts had a basic commander for 800.plus and his order in price is at least 100.00 + tax more than buds on anything.

I'm with you on the front cocking serrations and I like the colts a lot for reasons you mention. I'm just torn on the S&W for concealed carry because of the weight. For that weight it could even replace a commander lightweight. I still wouldn't mind having a colt government range gun. Hmmm, officers lwt and S&W govt for ccw and colt govt steel for bedside and range shooting. Maybe at some point.

It's supposed to be pretty easy to change a series 80 into a series 70 if desired. I got this from a poster at another site:

Quote:
Conversion from Series 80 to 70 is 20 minutes of your time totally stripping the frame and slide (ya gotta do it for detailed cleaning every so often) and just not putting the Series 80 parts back in. A $4 frame filler goes inside to take the place of the little levers and keep the hammer and sear in place. I've done this. I've also put everything back, it works as designed.

I'm with you on libertarian also.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Para Ordnance with the LDA trigger!
I own a C7-45 and the trigger on that thing is smoother than...well, something really smooth...like glass, yeah!

I have pulled the trigger on hundreds of guns over the years and the LDA is far and away the best one I have ever had the pleasure to stroke!

I have the Para Limited LDA and I really like it. The trigger take up might mess with people who have spent a lot of time with a SA 1911. But the trigger pull IS butter. It's also way more accurate than I'll probably ever be. It's been very reliable after the first couple hundred rounds.

I do shoot my XD40sc more often, but I thinks that's only because it's easier to clean. (Lazy bastage I am....)

saltysquid,

My Colt Combat Commander...the one I got for 500 bucks...was made in 1973. Long before MIM parts got introduced into Colt's line. Long before the plastic parts, too.

Anonye looking for a nice, basic 1911/45 might do well to check out the Hi-Standard 1911s. I have been in these guy's shop and indeed, they do things right. The basic Armscor-made Hi-Standard mil-spec 1911 sells for 400 dollars (basically a RIA 1911 with a better fit and finish) and their 100% made in Houston, TX mil-spec 1911 begins at 530 bucks. I asked and they said there are no MIM parts in the Houston made 1911s. 530 bucks...yes...thats right and they're very nice pieces.

I have a feeling that when they start making more (these are avaialble but limited production right now), these will be THE inexpensive 1911 to have.

Check them out

Yes, there are some out there, but they are becoming harder to find and are a 500.00 price tag is the exception, not the rule. Plus with the small amount of mim parts the colt has it costs very little really to de-mim them with even quality wilson or ed brown parts so I would take that into consideration. I just got an enhanced lwt officers model that has had some parts upgraded, a trigger job and a few othe things so I will have to check and see if it still has an mim in it. Maybe not. I also put a down payment on a commander lwt ese. I went with an xse because for the most part cheaper than what it would cost me to get a base model and do the work myself. Yes, I finally made my mind up and it's colt for both. Later I will get a lwt govt size for carry also and decide what I want at that time. The 1911 bug is a pita.

The link has some very good prices and do definitely look worth checking out.

I was checking out STI for a while there and they have mim parts in them, decided I was better off going colt.
