I had Rich at Canyon Creek build me a 1911 off of a SA Mil Spec. At half the cost of a Les Baer, it shoots just as good (better than the LBs I have had the honor of shooting) and is just as reliable. Nothing against Baer products, they make an excellent pistol.
My suggestion is to sloopy70, where he can get an awesome gun by just working with an top-notch gunsmith that knows how to take care of his customers. If money is the issue, collect your thoughts on what you want on/out of the gun, then call Rich.
Congrats on your new gun, poortrader. She's a beauty!
I bought the Baer used from another board. The price was amazing. I almost thought that it was too good to be true. There are some bargins out there, but you really have to look for them.
The previous said that he had only shot 1000 rounds through it. Basically, he broke the gun in for me.

Thanks for the advice Old School... Not trying to be nosey, but without me goin crazy on the custom side of things just gettin a good shooting accurate good lookin gun, ABOUT how much would it run me???
Hey, they're both beautiful guns, no doubt about it. One comment I'll make from experience though is that the Les Baer will always hold it's value, where a heavily customized 1911 generally will not.
I've had this experience and so have many of my friends. Customizations seem to be like holsters, something you throw in to sweeten the deal, but you just can't get your money back. Now, if you'll keep the gun forever, this doesn't matter at all...

My 1911 has an ambi safety and an ambi mag release button, you are correct. Being that I have small hands, I have learned to drop mags using the middle finger instead of my thumb. It works on both the XD and my 1911 and it keep me from having to turn/twist the gun in order to change mags.
As for the price, Sloopy, it varys based on the work you want, the parts you choose, and the base gun. Call Rich at Canyon Creek and discuss the details.
Something to consider when it comes to a 1911. If you build it right, truly customize it to your taste and needs, you will never feel the urge to sell it (although I have had two offers). For me, this gun is perfect and buying a stock 1911 will be very tough. I will certainly grit my teeth when I buy the new EMP.
