Try #3 first... if it is hard to release without a mag, it'll be difficult with one as well, and is a function of how the slide stop was fitted to the pistol. Not much a mag can do there. Side note: If you have a fancy-schmancy high-dollar trigger job and you cringe at the idea of dropping the slide on an empty chamber because you believe it's bad for the 1911 sear/hammer hooks, pull the trigger and hold it back as you drop the slide; this takes up the slack in the mechanism and minimizes sear /hammer hook wear.
BTW, I didn't mean to imply my Shooting Star 8-round magazines weren't tested in range sessions or competition. I don't carry any equipment or ammo that I haven't personally tested... I just see alot of things "proven" in IPSC or IDPA matches that are just plain stupid (yes, I said stupid). The message is that I have tried these mags and trust them to work in a situation alot more important than a stage finish or match placement.

Even without a fancy smancy trigger job, one should never slam the slide forward on a 1911. If you want to and i don't advocate it...Try it about 50 times and see how often you 1911 goes to half-cock while you are shooting it... Even without a high dollar trigger job, your sear bounces and begins to wear destroying the critical angles needed for safety and reliability. Anyone who understands how the 1911 works and functions would never drop the slide on an empty gun. Even a cheap 1911 will run you 500$. I don't want to destroy a 500$ or a 2500$ gun and have the internals replaced just because i needed to see how my slide functioned.
So let me get this straight...If (big IF) you in the middle of a gunfight and you had to reload, you wouldn't drop your mag? You'd bend over and pick it up? what if you had a malfunction? Would you not drop a mag and seat a new one if you had to?
Maybe our LE's or Military can pipe in on this one.

I was always a little annoyed that I couldn't remove the base plate of the magazines, and just this past week I found out you can remove the follower and spring to clean the magazines.

mullanman, thanks for letting me know not to drop the slide. This is my first 1911 and I didnt know that. I had done it a few times, and it did slip to half cock once. In a real situation, I would definatly just let the mag fall as I reloaded, but I have never been in that situation. The slide does come forward easy enough unloaded with no mag. It comes forward pretty easy with the shooting star mag, but the factory mag makes it VERY hard to release the slide. I will load up a mag, and see how she drops and report back for each mag. Thanks for all the suggestions

I won't use McCormick mags. They bugger up the feed ramp in my LW Commander. When I had a steel framed 1911, McCormicks were unreliable, both 8 and 10 round mags. They may work for other folks but I won't use them in competition or real life. Went to Wilson mags and 10 years later never a mag related hiccup.
This is my opinion. Your opinion may vary.

...I didn't know either until a few years ago when I read an article on magazine maintenence, and there it was...a CMC Power mag being disassembled.

So, I got some ammo, and loaded up bolth Mags. It was actually very easy to release the slide with the magazines full. I guess that Kimber Mag, just didnt want me dropping the slide on an empty mag. Good call Mullanman. No more just dropping the slide on empty for me.
