1913 US Army issue Colt M1911, what would you pay?
I went to the LGS today to have them take a look at a pocket pistol I bought that isn't functioning right. I was looking at their 1911's while one of the guys called their gunsmith (on lunch... how rude, I would have waited!).
I noticed one of them had a ridiculous price tag of $3000 (given the rest of their 1911 stock, nothing was worth that much). At a quick glance it didn't look to be anything special, typical blue with black handguards, beautiful looking gun. The guy there informed me it was a Colt Army Issue 1911 mfg 1913. For the age, it looked great, would be nice for military collectors... I would be interested in it, except I don't know what they go for. Can anyone give me an idea on what the old WW1 1911's go for now days?

That might legitimately be the value of it but what would you use it for? IMO the purpose of a gun is to be shot especially if I'm gonna dump that kind of coin on it. I owned a colt Sistema 1911 from the 1950's (Argentine military/police issue) that was worth quite a bit and I shot the piss out of it. Great gun and it just felt right in your hands. Lots of people buy guns so they can put them on a mantle or have as a center piece for a collection of something or other but it seems a bit ridiculous to spend money on a functioning firearm and not actually shoot it. ymmv.

Of course I'd shoot it... they said it still fires, being almost 100 years old, as long as I maintain it, it'll probably last another 100 years and still fire If I buy it that is, I have a couple rifles I wanna buy first

It's a tough call man. You can get a pretty sweet Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, etc, etc, etc for that kind of change.

There's a tremendous amount of fraud involved with these older pistols. If you're interested you need to head to a good 1911 forum with LOTS of detailed pictures of the pistol.

As much as I would LOVE to own an old 1911 I would never pay that much for one.

Know what you are buying by totally researching the thing. Many of these supposedly original 1911s are in fact forgeries and parts guns and not original at all.
If it is indeed original and you can prove it and have documentation...it is worth 3 grand.

I could see me spending that kind of money on a old Colt but their would have to be something special about it. Documented. Otherwise I'd rather get a high end Wilson or such.
