What sights for RIA 1911?

This is a discussion on What sights for RIA 1911? within the M1911 forums, part of the Other Handgun Talk category; The factory sights have to go. I prefer either blank rear/dot front or 1 dot rear/dot front. What should I be looking at?...

Does your slide have dovetails cut in it already if not it may limit you as to whats available most RIA's until recently had front sights that were staked on to the slide.

Check out the RIA forum on M1911.com Lots of info on sights and as mentioned it depends on the model you have. The GI's have staked on front sights but tactical models have dovetailed (Novak style I think). Lots of info on RIA's there. Good luck and let us know what you come up with. I have held off on a RIA tactical due to the sight issue.

+1

On the m1911.org sight you can find out the measurements of the front sight stake so that you can make sure to get one that will fit (unless you want to have it milled).

Wondering about replacing mine on my RIA GI as well.

Can barely see them.

My smith said he'd recommend dovetailing the front and installing my choice of sights.

I've got Meprolights on my Kimber Pro Carry II and Trijicon on my Beretta PX4.

I like them both but with my eyes, I find I prefer the Meprolights. They seem to be brighter, easier for sight aquisition for me in more light levels including total darkness.

Nevertheless, I've been considering just good 3 dot sights as well.

I'm watching this thread....

I can't help with the RIA GI models as I'm not familiar with the specs of their sights. I do own a RIA Tactical and recently changed the front sight to a fiber optic from Dawson Precision. I left the factory Novak "style" rear sight in place.

The Novak "style" cuts that RIA uses are close to true Novak dimensions but the depth is slightly different. I believe Dawson and possibly Fusion Firearms are the only manufacturers making replacement sights for them. Any other sight may need some customizing of either the base or dovetail. It took me all of 5 or 10 minutes to install the Dawson front sight using a vise, two pieces of aluminum bar stock, tape, and a hammer. Dawson sends an aluminum installation tool with the sight.

Dawson's website does list a fiber optic stake on mil spec front sight for the RIA GI models. Give them a call its quicker than email.

I'm also interested in changing my stock sight in for night sights, I have been reading the posts all over the net and still a little unsure of which ones will fit my GI 1911. I looked at both Fusion and Dawson, guess I will have to measure everything and see which ones are the closest match. I will keep y'all posted.
