Question CCing a 1911 style pistol

My wife (and possible me later on) is interested in carrying the SA Micro Compact .45. I'm new to the whole 1911 style pistol and have a question on CCing this type of pistol.

What is the recommended way to carry this pistol? Unlike my XD's, this has a hammer and a manual thumb safety. Do you carry with the hammer down and safety off? Hammer back and safety on? Hammer back and safety off (since there is a grip safety as well)?

I'm a little concerned about the manual safety. I know we could train to take off the safety while drawing, but it's still a possibility. I'm sure I'll have more questions later on. Thanks.

hammer back safety on. Cocked and locked is what they call it. That is the preferred way by everyone I know to carry the 1911.

p.s. I have a CZ82 that is supposed to be carried cocked and locked but since I also carry my XD45C I lower the hammer on a live round for DA (1911 is SA only). The CZ82 is designed with a rebound hammer so the hammer has no chance of engaging the firing pin accidentally. I have to pull the trigger to fire it.

Also, I do not recommend lowering the hammer on a 1911. You have a good chance of slipping and having a negligient discharge. I have read about several instances where this happened. If you do feel the need to carry in this manner please put a 5 gallon bucket full of sand in your office and point the gun in there when lowering the hammer.

Hammer back, one in the pipe with the safety on.. It is a very safe way to carry actually. In order for the gun to discharge, the safety would have to be disengaged, grip safety depressed and the trigger pulled all at the same time. IMO they are even safer than many double action pistols

I agree with Kimber. Single action 1911's are safer than double actions IMO. I only carry 1911's and I always carry cocked and locked - condition 1. The gun is ready, it is as safe as the user is safe, and it is reliable.

Cocked and locked is how it was made to carry...

The Springfield Armory Micro Compact 1911 .45 is exactly what I carry every single day. For any 1911 (not counting things like the Para LDA, and other "unnatural" 1911s), there is only one way to carry it... Cocked and Locked (Condition 1). The manual safety, because of how it is positioned, is very easy to disengage when you need to discharge the firearm. With practice, it becomes second nature, and you don't even have to think about it. It is quite safe. If you get a chance, have somebody detail-strip a 1911 for you and show you how the safety works. You'll then see how safe it really is. Concerning hammer down on a loaded chamber, NEVER carry it like that. The 1911 is, in fact, designed to be carried cocked and locked. Also, be sure to run that gun through a good break-in process. Always ensure a gun's reliability before relying on it for defensive carry. One thing I can tell you, though, the Micro Compact will NOT disappoint you.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not new to CCing, just CCing a 1911 type pistol. I just spent a little time looking at a Kimber Ultra Carry II and I'm sure it's ok to carry with the hammer back. I also played with drawing and disengaging the safety and it is very easy to do. I guess this is a non issue now. Thanks for the input.

How is the field strip on the Micro Compact? I don't like the Kimber Ultra Carry II field strip as you need to insert a pin or paper clip through the guide rod to hold the spring back. Is this common to all 1911 style pistols or just the UCII? Is it this way on the MC? I believe you should be able to field strip any pistol w/o extra tools.

The 1911 was designed to carry cocked & locked. If you practice, flicking the safety off is part of the draw, no loss in speed what so ever. Safe, just as safe as an XD IMO, safer because of the manual safety.
