cocked and locked with one in the pipe is the only way to carry a 1911. trying to drop the hammer is just asking for a hole in something you dont want a hole in. also, It isn't that hard to carry a 1911 concealed, I carry a full size springfield GI 1911 every day, usualy in a Ctac IWB holster, some times in a OWB too. its not that difficult to conceal

I find my Kimber 4 inch easy to conceal, because a single stacker is so thin. Also, the 2 spare mags in a double pouch are very thin. If I'm doing the suit-jacket thing, I almost always choose the 1911 over the XD45C. Th Alessi CQC-S holster helps, because it is high, and tight.

Cocked and locked and ready to rock!

A 1911 in one form or another has been my go-to gun for a lot of years and I won't even consider carrying one any other way.

I've only carried 1911, due to their lower profile, and me being somewhat skinny, it's the only gun that will conceal well.

And of course, always cocked and locked. 5 years of carry like this and never a concern.

So true about lowering the hammer.
Plus in the Kimber manual it says...

No need for the sand bucket though. It's best to just drop the mag clear the chamber then drop the hammer by pulling the trigger. Plus you get another dry fire practice opportunity

Here are the conditions as described by Jeff Cooper :

Condition 0 - A round is in the chamber, hammer is cocked, and the safety is off.
Condition 1 - Also known as "cocked and locked," means a round is in the chamber, the hammer is cocked, and the manual thumb safety on the side of the frame is applied.
Condition 2 - A round is in the chamber and the hammer is down.
Condition 3 - The chamber is empty and hammer is down with a charged magazine in the gun.
Condition 4 - The chamber is empty, hammer is down and no magazine is in the gun.

So very true ... my dad told me a nice story about his days as an MP and doing fugitive transport/going after those who go AWOL/get into trouble off base etc. Basically him and his partner were in a hotel room and his partner decided to lower the hammer and needless to say they a night spent a night in the slammer until someone of a higher rank came to get them out.

When I used to carry a 1911, always condition 1.

However, I also had a holster with a thumbreak snap that rode between the hammer and firing pin...I probably wouldn't feel that was necessary now, but I was new to carrying, and wanted a little extra bit of (in my mind) security.

If one is concerned about carrying condition 1, this is always an option.
