Beginner sights question

Hey, I just placed an order from Buds for a Springfield Mil-Spec. I am going to eventually want to place some meprolights, novaks, or heine night sights on there. Regardless of what sights I get placed on there, am I going to need the slide to be milled for these types of sights?

Once again, thanks in advance

Jim

Yes and no.

You can get sights that "stake in" like the GI-style sights. If you go that route, then no, there is no milling required.

If you get a sight set that has a dovetailed front sight, then milling is required.

Any major advantages/disadvantages to either type of mounting sights?

Dovetailed sights are easier to adjust and/or change. Staked sights require a gunsmith to repair if they become loose.

If you are looking to save money when you install night sights, the staked sights will be a little cheaper since the gunsmith won't have to mill the slide for the front sight.

Not to mention that milled sights (rear) will also ride lower on the slide. IMO, only way to fly.

I've never seen a 1911 with staked rear sights. Do they even make such a thing?
