Full length guide rod coming loose

Hello All!

As most of you know, I have a LW Operator, and so far I am happy with it

However, I noticed after a range session with about 50 rounds of 230gr FMJ ammo, that when I go to field-strip it, the 5/32 Allen screw which you unscrew to take apart the two piece guide rod is not tight, it is noticeably loose, however, far from coming off.

Can this be a problem, should I check it between mag loads at the range

Steve

Either use some blue Loctite or ditch it.

Thread it to the next size with a tap and get the proper size hex screw from any hobby store, maybe even home depot, or lowes. Sounds like you might have over torqued it and strip the end...

Replacing the screw will probably fix it as well

ditch it and get a GI configured guide rod so much easier to take apart and I really don't think they add much for accuracy most of the time.

2 piece guide rods are trouble looking for a place to happen. Switch to a 1 piece FLGR or a GI plug and never have to worry again.

I have 1000's of rounds through my Colt with a 2-piece FLGR with no problems. That being said, if/when I begin having issues with it, it will go away and be replaced with a GI style rod.

Ive got a few thousand rounds through both my Loaded and TRP and never had the rod loosen up. Maybe try some vibra tite or blue loctite and previously suggested.

Hello All,

Hello All!

I think I know why it was coming loose. TOO MUCH CLP!

I apply the minimum CLP when cleaning, tighten it up good, and so far it has been staying tight

The best advice given by most posters is to get rid of the full length guide rod, especially if it is two-piece. They have not been proven to improve anything but do cause problems. The original short one-piece as designed by JMB did not need fixing. I got rid of the two I bought 25 years ago and put the originals back in about 15 years ago. And I immediately replaced the one that came in my new Kimber. They are a solution to a non-existent problem.
