Where would one get one of these? My dad was thinking of converting his Kimber Raptor from the FLGR to one of these. Also does anyone have any idea as to whether this is just a straight swap or is it more involved than that?

Numrich Gun Parts Corp. will have everything you need. Basically just the GI guide rod and plug.

Thanks Danp. I appreciate the help. So what is up with 1911 and FLGR's anyway? Weren't these things designed to be a tool free disassembly and isn't the FLGR a solution to a problem that never existed? Just wondering.

I vote for ditching it as well.

I ditched the one on my Kimber TLE not because it was problematic but because it made it a pain to take down. The pistol still works great and I saw NO loss in accuracy or change in function...but now I can take it down without some silly tool or acrobatics with the end of the magazine.

Many of the higher end 1911 makers are moving away from FLGRs on their "serious business" models. Many noteworthy pistol instructors (like Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch) also don't care for these things.

FLGR have been known to actually hurt accuracy.

Supposedly, FLGRs were going to keep the recoil spring from kinking when it compressed. That has never been an issue with any of my guns. My Colt already had one installed when I got it and hasn't been an issue in my gun, so I haven't messed with changing it out.

Yeah, I am not buying the "recoil spring kinking" theory either.

Dad's USMC issue pistol was made in 1943, rebuilt in the early 60s and he carried it in Nam and later in the reserves (then "liberated" it because he felt the Corps owed it to him LOL). If the recoil spring in that M1911A1 never kinked....guess what...I call BS on 1911 recoil springs kinking up.

Anyone else notice the odd weight it adds to the 1911? Its like someone taped a weight on the muzzle. If you're used to standard 5" 1911s without a FLGR...you will notice this. Don't know about hurting accuracy but the weight up front feels wierd and unbalances what is one of the best balanced autopistols ever made.

Ditch the FLGR...you'll be glad you did.

+1, I had the same prob, switched to the GI and never looked back. IMO take down was alot easier since it didn't involved the allen wrench. Accuracy wise, never saw any difference, the whole 1911 is heavy enough, don't see any down side to removing it.
