I'm not saying they're crap, I'm just saying I don't trust one to function 100% of the time from the factory. I've seen plenty (that had made several trips to gun smiths and the factory generally) that functioned flawlessly.
Springfield admittedly had issues with the slide finish on some of the earlier XD's. If you still have it, give them a call, I'm sure they will gladly refinish it for you. If they offer to do that, maybe you can haggle with them for a free magazine for your trouble.

Oh, and Kimber's don't suck, but they sure could use some improvements in their customer and warranty service. You'd think since Springfield is one of their main competitors, they'd at least try to match their stellar service.

Not to get off topic but does it matter how old the gun is? I brought my XD before the Melonite finish and before the XD Gear. Would they still refinish it?

If you've got some rust, they very well may do so. They've got top-notch customer service, but the only way to find out if they'll do anything for you is to call.

I have three 1911's. A Kimber Tactical Ultra, a Springfield Champion, and a Colt(OK, the Colt is a Mustang .380. I prefer the Springfield, but the Ultra is a good gun. I had to have a little work done on the feed ramp. It also has a lousy finish. As far as I am concerned, Kimber's quality control leaves something to be desired. It bothered me to have repairs done on a gun that cost as much as mine did. But the gun is now reliable, accurate, and easy to carry. It gets carried a lot. Using a belt holster, it is probably the only gun I carry. It is a good gun, not a great gun in my estimation.

Not crap, you may get a gun that works great, or you may get a work in progress. If it's the latter, don't depend on Kimber to fix it. It's not that they won't try, they will. But three trips back to Kimber for one gun and two trips for another, taught me not to waste my time.

I have a Custom II Target model that I got almost 2 months ago and have had no problems with it. I have put about 325 rounds through it.

I am the only one who keeps seeing the 3 and 4 inchers having most of the problems?
