Thickness of 1911 vs XD (or Glock)?

My friend, having compared the thickness of his Glock .40 (not sure of model# - compact frame I believe) against a standard 1911 (not sure of brand) is convinced that the difference is miniscule and thus concealing the 1911 isn't any easier.

I don't have a 1911 so I can't do any measurements, but it sure seems to me that a single-stack steel-framed .45 must be substantially slimmer and easier to conceal.

Anyone who owns both a polymer and a 1911 have an opinion or any measurements on this?

If you take BOTH pistols in .45 acp then the 1911 will win hands down.

1911 is considerably thinner then ANY Glock model. Even more so with the .45 auto/10mm frame widths.

Perhaps he has really fat grips on his 1911...

PT1911 measures 1.200 (rounded up) and XD9sc measures .925; both measures on the slide (barrel). Grips are 1.34 (PT1911 with aftermarket grips) and 1.21 on the XD. Wear both in IWB holsters. XD in High Noon split decision and conceals well if in the 4:00 position. PT1911 in a D. M. Bullard Dual Carry and it disappears; held tight against the body and almost no printing. Not sure if this helps but with the right holster either will conceal well. Sure someone will be along in a bit touting the Crossbreed Supertuck. Don't have one (yet) so I can't say; but, the Bullard Dual Carry would be hard to beat in concealing a compact or full size auto.

Hm, so you're saying my friend's correct and the 1911 you've got is actually _thicker_ than the XD, on both the slide and the grips? Dang - I hate being wrong .

I just compared my XDM-40 to my 1911 and they appear pretty close in thickness to the naked eye. I don't have my XD-45 with me so I can't compare those two at the moment, but I am pretty sure the XD-45 is thicker than the 1911.

Like I said....if you don't compare the .45 acp version with the 1911 you are going to screw up.

My 1911 (a Baer Stinger) is ever so slightly wider in the grips than my XD 45...and yes, the 1911 has standard 1911 grips on it (got the from Sarge's Grips)

The XD is slightly wider on the slide...I measured them .

1911 grips = 1.270"
XD grips = 1.212"

1911 slide = .916
XD slide = 1.180, that is actually a measurement of the top of the frame (the widest part of the XD)....the actual slide width of the XD is 1.094".
