In NJ, I'm 99.99% positive that off-duty must carry concealed. No open-carry in NJ unless in uniform.

Hi, from Alabama.

Down here in the south, detectives open carry as do officers off duty.

But, I always carry concealed. You wont know until it is too late

I want to blend in and look like a sheep until I can get the drop on the bad guys

If you open carry, then you are a target.

Agreed. We can carry just about anywhere - but open carry is subject to lots of restrictions based on local laws/policies. Best to keep a low profile and ask yourself the question, "Why poke a sleeping tiger in the nads with a sharp stick unless you have to?"

My thoughts on it (and my personal policy) is carry everywhere, just don't let others know you are (i.e., concealed carry when out of uniform/off duty and keep the badge handy).

Exactly what I do. Badge directly in front of holster. No need to advertise, and end up with a bull's eye on your back in a SHTF situation....

I've never been to NY but is it true NYPD isn't allowed to carry while OD?

My agency strongly recommends carrying a gun if in the city limits, even OD. If you want to open carry, you need to have your badge or clothing identifying yourself as a police officer...otherwise conceal carry.

If I'm not in uniform or special assignment I carry concealed.

H.R. 218 makes it legal for officers to carry nationwide. Don't be hating on Texas when we actually are pretty strict about open carry (not with LEO's because it's LEGAL according to HR 21. Now, since one of my really close friends has been with NYPD for 14 years I know for a fact that they can carry off-duty and have been able to for most of the century. Although the PA cop being on vacation carrying open with his badge in NJ is legal, I think it is incredibly stupid! Who the hell wants to get involved in something bad when you are off-duty with no radio, no back-up, nada? Sounds like a rookie poser to me. I carry off duty nation wide. Why? Well, after placing several VERY bad dudes in jail over my career and having been threatened by them I feel it is the safest thing form me and my family. I ran into a guy I locked away for murdering his wife at the begining of my career while I was at the movies with my small sons. He looked at me several times but I don't think he put the two together but things could have been very bad. Especially since the dude was a full-patch Bandido and club officer for one of the most violent groups in SATX.

Don't buy into the anti-gun IACP bull crap. I think everyone, LEO or not that has proven to be responsible should be allowed to carry concealed. Don't hear of mass shootings in Israel by non-terrorists do ya?

Got to agree with you on the open carry observations.....the guy had to be aware that it's just plain dumb to open carry out of uniform and without any form of backup/protection AND in a strange state. Even department detectives don't open carry on the job!

International Association of Chiefs of Police. They like to get together once a year and make blanket statements telling the world that we LEOs advocate the abolishment of the 2nd Amendment to make the world a safer place. In my opinion they are an arrogant bunch who feel they make all decisions regarding the future of law enforcement. I am certainly no fan. They don't speak for me or most any other officer I have worked with or known!

No flame to others but NJ is a "strange" state isn't it?
