1. If possible, tell the 911 dispatcher that you are armed. Or, have someone else on the scene do it.

2. If you are holding someone at gunpoint, you should instruct the bad guy(s) to face away from you. One of the many advantages is that you can lower the gun to low-ready. It'll look less threatening to the police, and it will decrease the risk of an accidental discharge into the a bad guy that some would argue is no longer a threat.

3. In some scenarios you may be able to keep yelling and repeating "I'M MAKING A CITIZEN'S ARREST. I'M WAITING FOR INSTRUCTION FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT."

4. Stay aware of your surroundings. You don't want to be so focused on the bad guy that you can't see/hear the cops yelling at you to put the gun down. Obviously, you don't point a gun at a cop. In the vast majority of videos I've seen, the cops gave the person holding a gun a many chances to put the gun down even when the person is a known bad guy.

4. If the immediate threat is neutralized before the cops show up, simply reholster the gun. If that's not possible, keep it pointed at the ground with your finger nowhere near the trigger. Putting it down isn't a great idea because you don't know what other threats could still exist.

5. In the event that the cops somehow respond during a gunfight, you'll just have to take your chances. Presumably, the risk of not defending yourself is greater than the risk of getting shot by a cop.

Guns ain't Barbie dolls, and these situations are part of what is often talked about as the responsibility of bearing arms.

All this reminds me of this thread................
CCW badge?

I'm not LEO.
But I feel the the right to carry a badge (whether it be LEO or FD)
is something that should be earned, not bought.

I think I managed to tell him enough to keep him (my brother) from buying such a stupid item as a CCW badge.

However, I dont want the point of this post to be lost. His idea for carrying such a badge wasnt because he wanted to intentionally impersonate an officer for "Mall Ninja" reasons, but rather because his local police department has scared the **** out of him by saying they will shoot first ask questions later.

Fear is the reason he asked this question. No stupidity. He is 44 years old and has owned a gun at least half his life.

Just in case any of you are in his area and might could check into such shenanigans by the police department I will let you know he lives in Huntsville Alabama. That means the police departments in question would be Huntsville PD or Madison County Sherrif Department.

How is a stupid CHL badge going to make any kind of difference at all?

Our department has had two off-duty cops killed by responding officers, and they had real poe-leese badges.

I just read through that other thread quickly and agree with most of it. Folks who wear badges on their belts whether an off-duty officer, CWL holder, or otherwise are advertising to a violent and educated (in the ways of crime, that is) "shoot me first because I shoot back".

Not taking sides with the badge owners, but that argument doesnt work. If it did, open carry would have no support either.

Agreed. Open carry is a terrible idea in my eyes too.

They said if you are trying to be a good Samaritan in a store, or even if you catch a thief and hold him until the cops arrive, you might still get shot if you have a gun in your hand.
Perhaps someone ought to remind the Police Chief that if a policeman opens fire on a person, even if that person has a weapon, without actually being in fear of death or great bodily harm, they are guilty of murder.

ANYONE that shoots first and asks questions later can be, and probably will be, tried for murder unless that imminent threat is substantiated.

The officer's on the radio are morons. If you are going to be shot on sight when you have a weapon in your hand, how would they know that you're not an undercover or off duty cop making an arrest? If they actually intend to shoot everyone that has a firearm as soon as they arrive, they shouldn't be cops.
