The academy tought us weak side vertical, but our dept. does not have a policy. As long as you can qualify, you can carry them how you prefer.

That being said, after having tried other ways, I still carry vertical on weak side. Since I trained with it, it's what I'm used to. It works for me and I haven't found a reason to change it yet. I don't see many horizontal mag carriers for plain clothes or off-duty. Vertical is easier to conceal if you have a single mag pouch. Muscle memory prefers that I carry the same way on and off duty.

BTW, welcome to the skinny cop club. I also have a 34" waist.

Weak side sequence - CP holster, double open top mag carrier (with Ka-Bar TDI on pants belt, behind mags) w/2 12 round .40 XD mags, 'cuff case (don't carry these at small of back - have fallen on them a few times while I was on road duty - once with a 300 lb perp on top of me and learned the hard way about HURT).

Small of back - antibacterial wipe case (much softer than 'cuffs!)

Strong side sequence - Blackhawk CQC L II holster w/XD .40, ASP in carrier behind the holster

Cell and keys in front (keys - weak side, cell strong side)

2 way clipped inside weak side wallet pocket with mic/speaker clipped to same side shoulder tab.

Unlike most of you guys, I have WAY more belt room than I need. With a 40" waist, you can get lots more gear on the belt, so get with it at McDonald's and tank up on the fries and BigMacs. Shortly, you'll be able to pack a full size radio somewhere on that belt!

I wear a AE Nelson tripple 1911 pouch horizontal between my pretty just to the strong side of my buckle.

I'm in hacker15's class 40" wise so I have plenty of room though I'm startign a duty belt reduction program monday!

Two double mag pouches with velcro closure mounted horizontally facing the center of the belt or even facing away from center of the belt for that matter. Makes for easy reloads from any position and either hand from standing, kneeling, sitting, supine and even prone positions. Try/traing with it at the range and compare to vertical carry, see what you think.
