First, anything like this that you see on TV is staged to a degree- or you wouldn't be seeing it on TV.

I went through KCPD's Academy in '80. Our oldest recruit was 31 and she had a hell of a time with the PT's. I was 24 and it was no cakewalk for me. The PT's were the easy part; the defensive tactics training was where we lost people; broken bones, dislocated joints etc. Yes they were serious and this was in the days before the 'kinder, gentler' approach to LE & military basic training.

I really don't get the 'distance run' aspect of the training mentioned in the first few posts. Better to be able to 'pour it on' for a quarter mile, and still have enough upper body strength to kick ass & take names when you get there.

Agreed. I teach my trainees "Dan's rule of two" which is; If you don't catch them within two blocks or two fences you need to back off and set up a perimeter.
