Check with the local Sheriff's Dept. I have noticed that a lot of them don't worry about eye sight issues-just whether or not you can see.

You would have to check with the departments. I applied for the California highway Patrol and am going to academy in 3 weeks

I think you may need to find better recruiters. I have a lazy left eye, I can't read or shoot with it. My right eye requires correction, but I have 20/20 vision in it with bifocal contacts. I can make out shapes, but that's about it. At the DMV, where you have the 3 seconds (left, both, right) on the viewing exam, I can only see the middle and right sides. I served in the Marine Corps with no issues.

Secondly, wtf. How did you get in? You got a waiver? Please tell! You couldn't possibly have gotten through MEPS. What was your MOS? Last edited by av8_r22; 07-01-2008 at 05:09 AM. |

Nope. No waiver, no lying (hard to BS an eye test). MEPS didn't give me any problems (from what I remember, that was a few years ago though). The only problem I had was in boot camp, they couldn't get glasses right, so I pretended that I didn't need them and used a pair of smuggled contacts (did the same thing in Iraq, too). My MOS was a computer tech, but I don't see how that makes a difference. I spent a lot more time in Iraq behind a gun than behind a monitor. I'm sure you've heard the "Every Marine a rifleman" mantra, and it's not BS. Granted, there's NO way I could be a pilot, but I can see well enough to lay down accurate fire, and that's all that mattered. During my time in, I shot expert multipule times with both rifle and pistol, and even became a marksmanship instructor.
The only difference I can see in our situations is that you have a blind spot. I don't know if that's what's disqualifying you, but my advice would be for you to do what you think is right. No one can see that blind spot but you. I believe that if you can hold a driver's license, you can probably see well enough to serve. Thank you for your gratitude, and I wish you the best of luck with whatever route you choose. |

You never said, but can this blind spot be corrected medically, by either medicine or surgery. If so, it might be something to look into if you either have insurance or could afford it.
Now, if you have already been told no it cannot, then forget I even posted. |

Is a 78 a good ASVAB score? I believe thats what I scored back in highschool... 10 years ago... It was either 78 or 87... All I know is every recruiter was calling me and offering me pretty much any job I wanted.
To the OP... Check with your local municipalities and tell them everything up front. They may hire you, they may not, but you gotta check with them. The smaller departments may offer you a better chance and overlook your eyesight condition with your ROTC background. Its all up to them though. Good luck |
