You can pick your duty weapon and bug
Going to work the reserves upon re-deployment ( TCLEOSE exam when I get back), Chief says you can pick your duty weapon as long as 9mm and above, bug as well, what do you choose and why?

As far as duty carry goes, don't buy anything fancy or pretty, because it's gonna get worn, scratched, dirty, gouged, etc.
As far as caliber, .45 is nice, but you lose a little mag capacity. .40 is the LE caliber of choice for a bunch of reasons, but we won't start that debate here. Any modern polymer combat handgun will suit you just fine. (Polymer since you'll already have 20lbs+ on your belt) XD's, HK's, M&P's, Sigs, or even a BLOCK, would suit you just fine, it's just a matter of finding one that fits your hand best. As far as trigger type, if you have a choice, use the same type of trigger you're used to, unless you're willing to relearn a LEM or DOA type trigger (and that takes A LOT of practice to get good with it.) Whatever you choose, get some type of tritium night sights, and stick to the same platform for your BUG. Familiarity is key in high-stress situations. Just one Fed LE's $.02 |

Welcome to the forum, ewdc. Good advice you gave IMO.

I will say that no matter what you carry, a S&W 642 snubnose can be a great backup in your off hand side pocket. You do lose mag interchangability that way though

I have narrowed it down to:
1. XD45 Service Model (I have one and really like it, 13+1 45acp, good combo) Bug-not sure, would like to stay with 45acp, Glock 36, but have heard they have issues, kimber ultra cdp II, (can't use XD mags) SW642, but lose same ammo type, Glock 26 2. XD9 Service Model (16+1), bug Glock 26 (atleast same ammo type and more power than SW642 3 3. Glock 17 (17+1), bug Glock 26 (can use Glock 17 Mags), lightest of all. 1- shoots good, heaviest of all, just have to decide on bug 2- shoots good, lighter to carry than 45acp, bug Glock 26 3- only one I don't already own, but have in the past, lightest package to carry of all, but XDs just seem to feel better, but Glock 17 is the best of all glocks in my hand Either 45 or 9mm 45-big bullet, shoots well, twice as much in cost of ammo, weighs the most to carry daily 9mm-many rounds, lighter carry and cheap ammo

Do you already own a Glock 26? If you shoot a 26 well and like it, why not go with the 17 + 26 combo? I love the XD, but if you are going to carry a backup gun in the same caliber, at least make the mags interchange... That's my thought

I carry a Springfield MC Operator for my primary and an S&W M-36 for backup.
ETA: +1 on the Glock 17/26 combo. I have recently qualified a couple of officers on those guns; it just makes good sense. Another good one would be the XD-9 Service/Sub-compact combo.

All guns mentioned I have except G17, which I can buy very cheap.
I like the XD45 and XD9, but the only factor weighing against them is the Glock can swap mags easily, so the G17/G26 seems to edging out. If I could come up with a positive bug for the XD45? The G17 setup would be lighter, but is 9 going to be a good caliber to carry?
